And the possibility of charging him and others was widely discussed after thousands of pro-Trump supporters assaulted scores of police officers, defaced the U.S. Capitol, and hunted for lawmakers to stop the certification. Some called their actions treasonous,\u201d the AP said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-59 Component-p-0-2-50\">\u201cBut to date,\u201d the outlet continued, \u201cneither Caldwell nor any of the other more than 500 defendants accused in the attack&nbsp;has been indicted for sedition or for the gravest of crimes a citizen can face, treason. And as an increasing number of lesser charges are filed and defendants plead guilty, those accusations may never be formally levied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AP added that sedition charges are \u201crare,\u201d and that where they have been leveled, cases became complex. The last time the United States government accused individuals of sedition was in 2010, but a judge \u201cordered acquittals \u201d on those charges in 2012, because prosecutors\u2019 evidence \u2014 manifestos and \u201cdiatribes\u201d about the government \u2014 were First Amendment protected speech.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet also noted that, over the course of U.S. history, fewer than 10 people have been convicted of treason.<\/p>\n<p>Alleged participants in the January 6th riots may also, indirectly, have President Joe Biden to thank for the lower-level charges. The Trump administration leveled charges of \u201cassaulting federal officers, civil disorder, and failing to obey\u201d against rioters who took to the streets of Portland, Oregon last summer. The Biden administration has disposed of most of those cases; nearly half of those charges were dropped, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/almost-half-of-federal-cases-against-portland-rioters-have-been-dismissed-11618501979\">per the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, likely providing a standard for prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Around 560 people have been arrested in connection with the riots, but high-level charges are rare \u2014 rarer even than the Associated Press seems to acknowledge. In late June, Attorney General Merrick Garland held a press conference to announced that one alleged rioter, an Illinois man, had been charged with assaulting a member of the press, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/legal-issues\/500-arrested-in-jan-6-capitol-riot-including-first-charged-with-assault-on-media-member-garland-announces\/2021\/06\/24\/cc972198-d529-11eb-ae54-515e2f63d37d_story.html\">according to the Washington Post<\/a>. Otherwise, many of the alleged rioters have been charged with entering a restricted building, criminal trespass, and, in some cases, obstructing justice.<\/p>\n<p>According to a searchable database compiled by Business Insider, the most common charge include, \u201centering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds,\u201d \u201cdisorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds,\u201d \u201cengaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds,\u201d \u201cdisorderly conduct in a Capitol building,\u201d and \u201cassaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far, only 13 of those charged rioters have entered guilty pleas.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
