The World Health Organization (WHO) designated it a \u201cvariant of concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 was first identified in India late last year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/5-things-to-know-delta-variant-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yale Medicine<\/a>. It has since been detected in over 100 countries, including the U.S., according to the WHO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/weekly-epidemiological-update-on-covid-19---6-july-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 6 weekly epidemiological report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A viral image attempts to falsely allege&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/trumptalking\/photos\/a.1364230846967240\/4281340045256291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a post<\/a> that the Delta variant is fake. The Facebook post includes a doctored photo of former President Donald Trump holding a folder with the words \u201cThe Delta Variant Is Fake News.\u201d The picture of Trump posing with the folder is <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/trumps-first-order-of-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commonly used<\/a> as a meme template.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/04\/30\/fact-check-moderna-vaccine-luciferin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does The Moderna Vaccine Contain Luciferin?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC) shows the Delta variant was one of the most common COVID-19 strains detected in the U.S. in June. The variant, also known as B.1.617.2, has since become the most dominant strain in the U.S., making up over 50 percent of cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/07\/06\/1013582342\/delta-is-now-the-dominant-coronavirus-variant-in-the-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/07\/09\/delta-covid-strain-dominant-in-ustips-for-vaccinated-people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> reported last week.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/activities\/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">currently labels<\/a> the Delta variant as a \u201cvariant of concern.\u201d That means the variant has, in addition to meeting the \u201cvariant of interest\u201d definition, been associated with an \u201cincrease in transmissibility or detrimental change in COVID-19 epidemiology,\u201d an \u201cincrease in virulence or change in clinical disease presentation\u201d or a \u201cdecrease in effectiveness of public health and social measures or available diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/activities\/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Delta variant\u2019s impact has led to some countries reimposing coronavirus restrictions due to a rise in COVID-19 cases, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/07\/13\/the-surging-delta-variant-brings-new-uncertainty-to-the-economic-recovery-experts-warn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a>. For example, French President Emmanuel Macron recently said only those who have been vaccinated or tested negative for COVID-19 will be permitted in restaurants, bars, malls, trains, theaters and certain other venues, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/france-reimposes-restrictions-as-delta-variant-spreads-11626123063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image\u00a0shared on Facebook over 1,700 times claims the COVID-19 Delta variant is \u201cFake News.\u201dVerdict: False The Delta variant has been detected in over 100 countries.
