The City of Dorval has called it \u201cfalse news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10226332808405833&amp;set=a.10212195985194088&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">viral post<\/a> alleges the Dorval mayor sent out an anti-Muslim note to parents after some Muslim parents requested that pork be removed from school cafeterias in Montreal and its suburbs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.dorval.qc.ca\/en\/the-city\/page\/message-from-the-mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current mayor<\/a> of Dorval is Edgar Rouleau.<\/p>\n<p>The message the Dorval mayor supposedly sent starts by saying Muslims \u201cshould be aware that they should adapt to Canada and Quebec their customs, traditions and their way of life.\u201d It ends with the mayor allegedly saying, \u201cIf you accept the situation, stay. If not then prepare to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim about the Dorval mayor has been circulating online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.dorval.qc.ca\/en\/news\/article\/the-city-of-dorval-denounces-false-news-circulating-on-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">since at least January 2015<\/a>. It is, however, false and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/ishmaeldaro\/dorval-mayor-pork-letter-hoax?fbclid=IwAR2EqTPPCYnLaKuW2YNQpwCEEnFDyevurvq1dzxVvRMkxZJK-vVLlQ-JZ7M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">routinely debunked<\/a> as a hoax over the years.<\/p>\n<p>A search of press releases on the City of Dorval\u2019s website turned up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.dorval.qc.ca\/en\/search\/2ab8a99f1adae58bbbbdde06c2b82728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no statements<\/a> from the mayor matching the one in the Facebook post. Check Your Fact also didn\u2019t find any reports from Canadian news outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/search?q=dorval%20muslim%20mayor&amp;section=news&amp;sortOrder=relevance&amp;media=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/search\/?search_text=dorval+mayor+muslim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Gazette<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/?s=dorval+mayor+muslimhttps:\/\/globalnews.ca\/?s=dorval+mayor+muslim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global News<\/a>&nbsp;quoting the mayor as saying it.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2015, the City of Dorval put out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.dorval.qc.ca\/en\/news\/article\/the-city-of-dorval-denounces-false-news-circulating-on-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> calling the claim \u201cfalse news.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/01\/19\/fact-check-livermore-marshall-kamena-donald-trump-evan-sayet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The Livermore, California Mayor Write This Piece Explaining Donald Trump\u2019s \u2018Success And Popularity\u2019?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Dorval wishes to denounce this false article and resents this identity usurpation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.dorval.qc.ca\/en\/news\/article\/the-city-of-dorval-denounces-false-news-circulating-on-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reads<\/a> the statement. \u201cInternet users across the world have published this false news as it was true, and the mayor would like to set the record straight by saying that, on no account, he, nor any the City\u2019s representatives, have made such comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same comments have been falsely attributed to the mayors of other cities in countries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/belgium-mayor-pork-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Belgium<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.aap.com.au\/social-media-claims\/canteen-pork-ban-refusal-post-reheats-and-repeats-old-false-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The image included in the Facebook post also does not show Dorval\u2019s current mayor, <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.ca\/en\/elected-officials\/edgar-rouleau-1344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rouleau<\/a>, a reverse image search revealed.
