Pete Ricketts (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Huntsville, Alabama \u2014 Gov. Kay Ivey (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Omaha, Nebraska \u2014 Gov. Pete Ricketts (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Salt Lake City, Utah \u2014 Gov. Spencer Cox<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Sioux Falls, South Dakota \u2014 Gov. Kristi Noem (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Billings, Montana \u2014 Gov. Greg Gianforte (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>Similarly, nine of the ten worst cities for labor market recovery are in Democrat-run states:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>Hialeah, Florida \u2014 Gov. Ron DeSantis (R)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>New Orleans, Louisiana \u2014 Gov. John Bel Edwards (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Long Beach, California \u2014 Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Glendale, California \u2014 Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Newark, New Jersey \u2014 Gov. Phil Murphy (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>New York City, New York \u2014 Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Los Angeles, California \u2014 Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>San Bernardino, California \u2014 Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Chicago, Illinois \u2014 Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>North Las Vegas, Nevada \u2014 Gov. Steve Sisolak (D)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>Many cities have significantly more robust labor markets than before the recession. For instance, Nashua\u2019s May 2021 unemployment rate was 44% lower than its May 2019 unemployment rate. However, the trend is entirely reversed for other cities: in Glendale, New York City, and Newark, respectively, unemployment in May 2021 was 171%, 158%, and 124% greater than in May 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another WalletHub study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-labor-market-healthiest-in-red-states-suffering-in-blue-states\"><span>produced<\/span><\/a><span> similar results: nine of the top ten states for labor market rebounds are led by Republicans, while all of the bottom ten are led by Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/here-are-the-10-best-and-worst-cities-ranked-by-economic-recovery\/\"><span>Foundation for Economic Education<\/span><\/a><span> policy correspondent Brad Polumbo points out, \u201cthose cities whose governments strangled economic activity over an extended period of time and hoped it would all come back when they decided to \u2018open up\u2019 are clearly still experiencing the economic pain.\u201d Likewise, the availability of \u201cultra-generous unemployment benefits that pay many unemployed people more to stay home on welfare surely has had some influence on these rankings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Polumbo referenced, many states \u2014 all but one of which are led by Republican governors \u2014 are voluntarily opting out of enhanced federal unemployment benefits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/thousands-of-americans-are-suing-their-governors-for-opting-out-of-extra-federal-unemployment-handouts\"><span>offered<\/span><\/a><span> by the federal government.
