The Associated Press has since <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-government-and-politics-colombia-caribbean-haiti-5066fd5e0169cce7df8950843c8d3544\">reported<\/a> that Claude Joseph, the interim prime minister, has made such a request.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe definitely need assistance and we\u2019ve asked our international partners for help,\u201d he said. \u201cWe believe our partners can assist the national police in resolving the situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/colombian-suspects-haiti-presidents-killing-arrived-via-dominican-republic-2021-07-09\/\">Reuters<\/a>, Elections Minister Mathias Pierre said officials were particularly concerned about ports, energy infrastructure, and the airport, all of which they worry could be susceptible to attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press, citing an unnamed senior Biden administration official, reports that the Biden administration says it doesn\u2019t have plans to send military troops.<\/p>\n<p><span>Haiti has long-struggled with its political structure and economy, and many fear that the president\u2019s assassination could make the situation more dire. There is also uncertainty about who, exactly, should be in charge of the government.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Only two days before his assassination, the late president appointed someone else to succeed Joseph as prime minister, a change that was supposed to happen before the end of the week.&nbsp;<\/span><span>The appointee, a surgeon named Ariel Henry, reportedly told a Haitian newspaper that he is really the rightful prime minister, not Joseph, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/08\/world\/americas\/haiti-prime-minister.html\"><span>according<\/span><\/a><span> to The New York Times.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m not interested in a power struggle,\u201d Joseph told AP of the uncertainty. \u201cThere\u2019s only one way people can become president in Haiti. And that\u2019s through elections. So I\u2019m asking everyone to work together so the country can have an elected president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday that the United States was sending FBI and DHS officials to the Haitian capital to investigate in response to a request, but did not mention anything about military assistance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe United States remains engaged and in close consultations with our Haitian and international partners to support the Haitian people in the aftermath of the assassination of the president,\u201d White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a Friday briefing. \u201cIn response to the Haitian government\u2019s request for security and investigative assistance, we will be sending senior FBI and DHS officials to Port-au-Prince as soon as possible to assess the situation and how we may be able to assist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Haitian officials say they have arrested two U.S. citizens and more than a dozen Colombian nationals on accusations that the group killed the president while masquerading as DEA Agents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The two Americans have alleged they only provided translation services to the group, and believed the conspirators were only going to arrest him, <\/span><span>according to a Haitian judge participating in the investigation.
