I\u2019m looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, \u2018Good, let them cancel it. I\u2019ve been paid!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of outlets reported the remark as a straightforward observation, prompting the comedian to take to Twitter to correct the record. \u201cJust to be clear, I did not say \u2018The Office\u2019 would be canceled if it were made today. That makes no sense. It\u2019s still around. This is my actual quote. \u201cSomeone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I said, \u2018Good, let them cancel it. I\u2019ve been paid!\u2019 Clearly a joke,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rickygervais\/status\/1413499847634681862?s=20\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gervais also said he believes the show\u2019s humor transcends the cultural sensitivities of particular eras, commenting, \u201cThe themes are universal: good and bad bosses, doing a decent job, boy meets girl, wanting to be loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, even within the BBC\u2019s reporting, one academic analyzed the series through a politically correct lens, claiming the Brent\/Scott character subjects his employees to bias and microaggression.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Simon Weaver, a senior lecturer in media and communications at Brunel University in London, told the outlet that the show \u201ccaptures the mundanities of modern work and the ways in which employment structures operate, slowly but surely, to strip away the dreams and aspirations of workers.\u201d He added, \u201cDavid Brent is the quintessential authority figure for contemporary society. His abuses are micro-aggressions, unconscious biases and ignorance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weaver rejected the idea that \u201cThe Office\u201d has timeless appeal, arguing it reflects a particular moment of relative peace and economic security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe comedy works as a reflection on a period of prosperity, between the Cold War and the war on terror, and long before austerity,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a situation where people are comfortable yet much of day-to-day life is still miserable and grey. There\u2019s a good chance that it\u2019s not going to be particularly relevant for people struggling on universal credit or furlough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bolstering the view that \u201cThe Office\u201d might not be as safe as Gervais would like to think, in May, an actress who had a bit part on the show playing a Benihana waitress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/actress-calls-out-the-office-over-problematic-portrayal-of-asian-american-character\">claimed<\/a> the role was \u201cracist.\u201d And in 2018, Carrell himself acknowledged that networks would likely shy away from the series now. &nbsp;\u201cIt might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted 10 years ago.
