Byron Donalds and four other House Republicans condemned the Department of Justice\u2019s (DOJ) recent lawsuit against Georgia\u2019s election integrity bill in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DOJ is using this bill as ammunition to divide the country and push the false narrative that Republican states are purposefully making it harder for minorities to vote in America,\u201d the Republicans write in the letter, obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller. Fellow Republicans Texas Rep. Lance Gooden, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Florida Reps. Gregory Steube and Bill Posey also signed the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The letter-writers accuse Garland of being \u201cknowingly deceptive\u201d in public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-files-lawsuit-against-state-georgia-stop-racially-discriminatory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">representing<\/a> the lawsuit as intended to \u201cstop racially discriminatory provisions of [the] new law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/25\/justice-department-georgia-lawsuit-election-law-merrick-garland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> June 25 it would sue to prevent Georgia from implementing its new election security law. The bill <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/31\/georgia-voting-bill-absentee-voting-id-requirement-food-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expands<\/a> voter I.D. requirements, requires three weeks of early voting, expands polling hours and places new restrictions on line-warming. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/07\/brad-raffensperger-line-warming-georgia-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED: The Real Story Behind Georgia\u2019s New Rules On Handing Out Food And Water To Voters)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many prominent Democrats, including President Joe Biden, Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/26\/jim-crow-2-0-critics-georgia-bill-kemp-abrams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">condemned<\/a> the legislation as \u201cJim Crow 2.0.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/press-release\/file\/1406456\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawsuit<\/a> alleges that the Georgia law \u201c<span id=\"page161R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">was enacted with the purpose of denying or abridging the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">right of Black <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Georgians <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">to vote on account of their race or color\u201d while \u201cr<span id=\"page166R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\">acial appeals have characterized a number of political campaigns in Georgia.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span>It also claims that the new provisions \u201c<span id=\"page171R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">will weigh<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"> more heavil<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">y on Black<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"> voters<\/span><\/span>\u2026 <span id=\"page171R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">both individually and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">collectively.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Donalds and the other four Republicans describe the lawsuit as a \u201cpolitically charged and misguided legal charade\u201d against a state \u201cengaging in [its] Constitutional obligation and purview to develop and pass election laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They write that Florida and Georgia have passed new election laws \u201cexpanding access to the polls, maintaining security protocols such as requiring photo ID, and preventing outside influence on the sanctity of our elections by protecting the chain of custody of ballots from electioneers and ballot harvesters. Today in America, it is easier and more secure to vote in states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas than in New York and the President\u2019s home state of Delaware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s election law also places new restrictions on line-warming and regulates the use of drop boxes to collect absentee ballots. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/07\/ron-desantis-florida-election-law-ballot-drop-boxes-ballot-harvesting-third-party-volunteer-water-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bans<\/a> ballot harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/texas-republicans-revive-voting-restriction-bills-begin-special-session-n1273395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">convened<\/a> a special session of the state legislature on Thursday to consider an election integrity measure. A previous <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/elections-2020-texas-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">version<\/a> of the bill included new voter I.D. requirements for mail-in voting and eliminated drive-through voting. It also included a provision that would make it easier for state judges to throw out election results, given evidence of voter fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Democrats are losing the argument and reversing their positions over appropriate voter laws like requiring an ID, the DOJ is acting as the political arm of the White House with their baseless lawsuit against a recently passed election law in Georgia,\u201d Donalds told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unfathomable that the DOJ has injected its authority under the guise of civil rights by politically attacking a state operating within its right to pass election reforms.
