That\u2019s what we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woods, in reference to Cuomo\u2019s actions during the COVID pandemic that were connected to the deaths of thousands of elderly members of retirement or nursing facilities, fired, \u201cCheck on your grandparents. The executive order outlined how the state would respond to rising gun violence, without any mention of the root causes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTop aides of Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo reportedly pressured state health department officials to alter a report to remove the total number of nursing home residents who died from the coronavirus,\u201d The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-cuomo-aides-edited-report-to-hide-nursing-home-death-toll-ahead-of-book-release-report\">reported<\/a> in March. \u201cThe governor\u2019s aides\u2019 purported role in editing the health department report suggests that the cover up of New York\u2019s nursing home data began much earlier than previously thought and as Cuomo began writing a book touting his leadership during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/04\/nyregion\/cuomo-nursing-home-deaths.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\">The New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;reported on the alleged cover-up:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><em>Top aides to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo were alarmed: A report written by state health officials had just landed, and it included a count of how many nursing home residents in New York had died in the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/em><em>The number \u2014 more than 9,000 by that point in June \u2014 was not public, and the governor\u2019s most senior aides wanted to keep it that way. They rewrote the report to take it out, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In December 2020, Cuomo claimed at a press conference that he was going to have a great holiday season, adding, \u201cSanta\u2019s going to be very good to me; I can tell. I worked hard this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s statement triggered a blunt reply from Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean, whose husband lost both of his parents to the coronavirus as they were located in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Dean fired back, \u201cWorked hard to help kill seniors, jobs and New York State in general?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.6810344827586\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Worked hard to help kill seniors, jobs and New York State in general?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Janice Dean (@JaniceDean) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JaniceDean\/status\/1341067695404539904?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In October 2020, CNN&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/01\/politics\/andrew-cuomo-nursing-homes-fact-check\/index.html\">fact-checked<\/a> Cuomo\u2019s claim that New York nursing homes \u201cnever needed\u201d to accept Covid-positive patients from hospitals and determined it to be \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/andrew-cuomo-blames-feds-for-ny-nursing-home-deaths-attacks-florida-here-are-some-facts\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported, Finger Lakes News Radio asked Cuomo about the New York Department of Health\u2019s administration\u2019s advisory in late March requiring nursing homes to accept the readmission of patients from hospitals, even those afflicted with the coronavirus.&nbsp;Cuomo replied:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"29\">\n<p><em>The rule that the state had, which was from the CDC guidance, right? The state didn\u2019t make it up; they were following the CDC guidance. Now you can say, \u201cWell, the state health department was stupid to follow the federal guidance,\u201d and you may have a point there. But the rule said the nursing homes can\u2019t discriminate on the basis of COVID. The law also said a nursing home cannot accept a person who they cannot treat effectively while protecting the other residents. That\u2019s the law. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The point of the two rules was, if hospitals became overwhelmed, which was a real possibility, if not probability early on, we\u2019d have to discharge people from hospitals and they\u2019d have to go back to nursing homes. And that\u2019s why the anticipatory rule was you can\u2019t discriminate against a COVID-positive person. But you\u2019d have to be able to take care of them without infecting other people. And if you can\u2019t do that, you can\u2019t accept them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We never needed nursing home beds because we always had hospital beds. So it just never happened in New York, where we needed to say to a nursing home, \u201cWe need you to take this person even though they\u2019re COVID positive.\u201d It never happened.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CNN took issue with Cuomo\u2019s claims, writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10.833333333333\">\n<p><em>Facts First:&nbsp;Cuomo\u2019s assertion that \u201cit never happened\u201d is false. According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/press\/releases\/2020\/docs\/nh_factors_report.pdf\">report<\/a>&nbsp;from the New York State Department of Health, \u201c6,326 COVID-positive residents were admitted to [nursing home] facilities\u201d following Cuomo\u2019s mandate that nursing homes accept the readmission of Covid-positive patients from hospitals. Whether or not this was \u201cneeded,\u201d it did in fact happen.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CNN noted the March 25, 2020&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/skillednursingnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/DOH_COVID19__NHAdmissionsReadmissions__032520_1585166684475_0.pdf\">advisory<\/a>&nbsp;that the state\u2019s Health Department issued, which stated: \u201cNo resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the [nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19. Nursing homes] are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CNN quoted a May 21, 2020 Associated Press&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/5ebc0ad45b73a899efa81f098330204c\">report<\/a> that acknowledged, \u201cMore than 4,500 recovering coronavirus patients were sent to New York\u2019s already vulnerable nursing homes\u201d under the state\u2019s advisory.
