Cory Booker (D-NJ) and fifteen other Democratic Senators want to give $1,000 to every American child every year until they reach adulthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/222\/text?r=68&amp;s=1\"><span>American Opportunity Accounts Act<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 reintroduced by Booker in January \u2014 would give each American child $1,000 in \u201cBaby Bonds\u201d at birth. Depending on household income, the child\u2019s interest-bearing account would receive up to $2,000 annually, which could be accessed at age eighteen for buying a home, starting a business, or paying for college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While children from disadvantaged families could see their accounts reach nearly $50,000 in value, children from wealthy families would only end up with a total of $1,600 by their eighteenth birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.546031746032\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In a country as wealthy as ours, every person should have access to economic opportunity and the chance to build assets and create wealth. Cory Booker (@SenBooker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenBooker\/status\/1402988775089655809?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>As CNBC reports, the plan could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/23\/baby-bonds-the-60-billion-plan-to-give-every-american-baby-1000-.html\"><span>cost<\/span><\/a><span> the federal government between $60 billion and $80 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Among the bill\u2019s cosponsors are Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Similar legislation in the House is endorsed by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTo truly \u2018build back better\u2019 our economy, we cannot ignore the extreme and persistent wealth inequality that deprives kids of economic opportunity right out of the gate,\u201d said Booker in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booker.senate.gov\/news\/press\/growing-momentum-for-baby-bonds-as-booker-pressley-re-introduce-landmark-legislation-to-combat-the-growing-racial-wealth-gap\"><span>press release<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cBaby Bonds will start to level the playing field. In a country as wealthy as ours, every person should have access to economic opportunity and the chance to build assets and create wealth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe racial wealth gap in my district and across the country is stark and only getting worse, exacerbating inequities and denying far too many people of color an opportunity to thrive,\u201d said Pressley. \u201cThese disparities are the direct result of generations of policy violence exacted against Black and brown communities, so we must be every bit as intentional in advancing policies that center racial and economic justice \u2014 policies like Baby Bonds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Booker likewise stresses the racial impact of his legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.2961165048544\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s past time we make meaningful strides toward closing the racial wealth gap in this country.
