As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2019\/07\/trump-administration-releases-details-fetal-tissue-restrictions\"><span>Science Magazine<\/span><\/a><span> reported at the time:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p><i><span>The new paperwork requirements, along with a new, lengthy ethics review, raise worries that many investigators will fail to land grants that rely on fetal tissue \u2014 and others won\u2019t even try to win them. \u201cWith these rules, it\u2019s not impossible\u201d to do fetal tissue research with NIH support, says Lawrence Goldstein, a stem cell neuroscientist at the University of California (UC), San Diego, \u201cbut it\u2019s going to be very problematic.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cThis does a pretty good job of doing what the pro-life people want. It makes grant applications a lot more onerous, substantially and procedurally, while allowing [the Trump administration] to say: \u2018We\u2019re not completely banning it,\u2019\u201d says Hank Greely, a bioethicist at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In 2018 \u2014 under the Trump administration \u2014 the NIH provided a record-breaking $115 million in grants involving human fetal tissue. In 2019, the agency granted $109 million; in 2020, the agency granted $82 million as the ban entered full effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Three months ago, however, the Biden administration issued another order that ended President Trump\u2019s restrictions. According to a release from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-admin-clears-the-way-to-allow-research-on-fetal-tissue-from-abortions\"><span>National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p><i><span>This notice informs the extramural research community that HHS is reversing its 2019 decision that all research applications for NIH grants and contracts proposing the use of human fetal tissue from elective abortions will be reviewed by an Ethics Advisory Board. Accordingly, HHS\/NIH will not convene another NIH Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cWe believe that we have to do the research it takes to make sure that we are incorporating innovation and getting all of those types of treatments and therapies out there to the American people,\u201d HHS Secretary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-perfect-rating-from-planned-parenthood-5-things-to-know-about-biden-hhs-nominees-abortion-record\"><span>Xavier Becerra<\/span><\/a><span> said about the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, data from the NIH reveal that the agency foresees an uptick in grants related to human fetal tissue. Presently, the NIH <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/report.nih.gov\/funding\/categorical-spending#\/\"><span>Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization<\/span><\/a><span> system predicts that the agency will spend $85 million in 2021 and $88 million in 2022 on fetal tissue research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a March analysis from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/inside-the-abortion-academia-industrial-complex-that-youve-probably-never-heard-of\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span> revealed, taxpayer funding of human fetal tissue research enables a multimillion-dollar \u201cabortion-academia industrial complex\u201d through which universities partner with local abortion facilities to experiment on the remains of preborn babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More recently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/uc-san-francisco-harvests-preborn-baby-genitalia-gonads\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span> reported that the University of California-San Francisco harvested reproductive organs \u2014 including \u201cgonads\u201d \u2014 from dozens of preborn children.
