The group found that doctors under contract with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had sterilized incarcerated women without proper approval. The results of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auditor.ca.gov\/pdfs\/reports\/2013-120.pdf\">audit<\/a> released the following year found 144 female inmates were sterilized by a procedure known as bilateral tubal ligation from 2005-2013, with 39 procedures done without lawful consent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/california-lawmakers-seek-reparations-for-people-sterilized-by-the-state\/2018\/04\/25\/2a873578-4869-11e8-8082-105a446d19b8_story.html\">According<\/a> to The Washington Post, more than 60,000 people were sterilized across the country last century as part of \u201ca public health strategy embraced by 32 states under eugenics laws that advocated \u2018better breeding.\u2019\u201d Many were reportedly sterilized \u201cagainst their will or without their knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a 2018 interview with The Post, Barbara Swarr said her aunt, Rosie Zaballos, died at 16 during a sterilization operation in the 1930s. Family members had described her as \u201ca little slow\u201d and took her to a state-run hospital in California to get sterilized. Swarr had reportedly \u201cpieced together the details of her aunt\u2019s short life and the prevailing attitudes toward immigrants, poor people and those with disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was something nobody thought twice about. \u2018If they are not all there, if they are Hispanic\u2026make sure they don\u2019t breed these inferiors,\u2019\u201d she told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>More details from the AP:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p><em>California\u2019s forced sterilization program started in 1909, following similar laws in Indiana and Washington. California\u2019s program was by far the largest. The state sterilized more than 20,000 people, accounting for about a third of everyone sterilized in the United States under those laws.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>California\u2019s law was so prominent it even inspired similar practices in Nazi Germany, according to Paul Lombardo, a law professor at Georgia State University and an expert on the eugenics movement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe promise of eugenics at the very earliest is: \u2018We could do away with all the state institutions \u2014 prisons, hospitals, asylums, orphanages,\u2019\u201d Lombardo said. \u201cPeople who were in them just wouldn\u2019t be born after awhile if you sterilized all of their parents.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Researchers say state records described some of the victims as \u201cfeeble-minded,\u201d \u201cweak-willed,\u201d or \u201cdependent on others\u201d and claimed their alleged mental conditions were \u201clikely to become transmitted to descendants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
