Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order on gun violence Tuesday, declaring it a \u201cDisaster Emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun violence is a public health crisis, and we must treat it like one,\u201d Cuomo wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYGovCuomo\/status\/1412480258536837124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cThis declaration will allow us to give the crisis the full attention &amp; resources it deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disaster emergency declarations are typically reserved for natural disasters and large scale incidents. The declaration will allow the state to redirect and expedite funds to communities it deems necessary, and is the first of its kind in the nation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/watch-gov-cuomo-to-make-major-announcement-on-gun-violence-in-new-york\/3141332\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to NBC 4 New York.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"12.471186440678\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Today I am issuing an Executive Order declaring a Disaster Emergency on gun violence.<\/p>\n<p>Gun violence is a public health crisis, and we must treat it like one.<\/p>\n<p>This declaration will allow us to give this crisis the full attention &amp; resources it deserves.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYGovCuomo\/status\/1412480258536837124?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>New York City was enjoying its lowest crime rates in six decades before seeing a huge spike last summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/14\/nyregion\/shootings-nyc-covid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>The violent crime wave has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/social-justice\/new-york-enacts-first-in-u-s-law-to-limit-gun-liability-shield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continued<\/a>, with shootings up 38% in the first six months of 2021 compared to the same time last year. The spike coincides with the Defund the Police movement\u2019s rise in American politics, as well as general anti-cop sentiment.
