And one lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mini-series, which is just a minor arc in a much larger universe that explores a more complex side of Captain America, per its promotional materials, premiered just ahead of Independence Day on June 30th and features an older Captain America looking back on his crime-fighting career while he prepares memorabilia for the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., per <a href=\"https:\/\/boundingintocomics.com\/2021\/07\/02\/marvel-reveals-steve-rogers-no-longer-believes-in-the-american-dream-in-first-issue-of-the-united-states-of-captain-america\/\">Bounding Into Comics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers is particularly concerned that he once believed that Captain America once told a US military general that he was \u201cloyal to nothing except the dream,\u201d referencing the \u201cAmerican Dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually said that once,\u201d Rogers sighs, pressing into a soliloquy on how the \u201cAmerian Dream\u201d is inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s the thing about a dream though. A dream isn\u2019t real,\u201d Rogers says.\u201d When we wake up, it goes away. And we\u2019re left with this yearning inside. Like something was taken from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLately,\u201d he adds, \u201cspending my days in this country, as the years march on by \u2014 I\u2019m starting to think America actually has two dreams. And one lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first American Dream is the one that isn\u2019t real. It\u2019s the one some people expect to just be handed to them, and then get angry when it disappears, when the truth is, it never really existed in the first place,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers and his writer, Christopher Cantwell, then tread into woke territory, warning that believing too fiercely in the American Dream is the pathway to dangerous \u201cnationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the white picket fence fallacy that, if we\u2019re not careful, becomes nationalism. Jingoism,\u201d Captain America says as he polishes his shield. \u201cThat dream isn\u2019t real. It never was. Because that dream doesn\u2019t get along nicely with reality. Other cultures. Immigrants. The poor. The suffering. People easily come to be seen as \u2018different\u2019 or \u2018unamerican.\u2019 The white picket fence becomes a gate to keep others out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at our best when we keep no one out. A good dream is shared. Shared radically. Shared with everyone. When something isn\u2019t shared, it can become the American lie,\u201d Rogers continues.<\/p>\n<p>Embellishing on his theory, Captain America finally concludes that the&nbsp;\u201clie is a real problem because it comes in the form of an empty promise.&nbsp;A while back, we told the world they could come here for a better life. But too often we turn our backs on them. Instead of a dream, they get handed a raw deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recently released issue is just the first in the \u201cUnited States\u201d series, and it is not clear whether Rogers will pursue a more progressive role.
