The Biden administration, with the support of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/department-education-implements-teach-grant-program-changes-benefit-teachers-and-students\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> that the annual grant amount for third and fourth-year students will double to $8,000 per recipient.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden\u2019s plan will also remove the existing GPA requirements for recipients in the hopes of increasing access for students of color. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe proposed plan also aims to increase the access that students from low-income backgrounds and students of color have to comprehensive teacher preparation,\u201d a press release from the Education Department reads.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The plan includes an additional $2.8 billion investment in programs such as \u201cyear-long, paid teacher residency programs,\u201d which the Biden administration claims will help enroll more \u201cteacher candidates of color\u201d and will have a greater impact on teacher retention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The administration claims that the requirement changes are \u201cexpected to increase the number of recipients by more than 50 percent to nearly 40,000 in 2022.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alongside tuition breaks, the Biden administration\u2019s plan will put $400 million towards \u201cteacher preparation\u201d at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities. The administration\u2019s plan will continue to subsidize HBCUs despite their graduate\u2019s poor loan repayment rate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-student-debt-crisis-hits-hardest-at-historically-black-colleges-11555511327\"><span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><span>, federal data found that black students who attend HBCUs were more likely to default on student loans than black students who attend other public or nonprofit colleges. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/04\/25\/historically-black-colleges-loans-elizabeth-warren\/\"><span>The Daily Caller News Foundation<\/span><\/a><span> reported that most graduates of black colleges owed more in student loans 12 years after college than they did following graduation, despite the perception that receiving a bachelor\u2019s degree decreases a graduate\u2019s debt load.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Zakiya Smith Ellis, a higher-education adviser to former President Barack Obama, called the discovery \u201cthe most shocking data of my career \u2026 We like to think of bachelor degrees as the Holy Grail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden\u2019s plan also aims to \u201creduce the repayment burden\u201d for TEACH grant recipients who do not complete their requirements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before the Biden administration, if grant recipients did not complete the mandated four years of coursework and four years of serving needy communities, their grants were converted into unsubsidized loans that recipients had to repay in full. Educators were given 120 days to certify that they were teaching at an underserved school following graduation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the Biden administration, there is no requirement for recipients to certify their intent to teach within 120 days of graduation and those grants will not be converted into loans.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The new plan will also open a \u201creconsideration process\u201d for any former TEACH grant recipients whose grants were converted to loans.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
