Jim Justice (R-WV) recently said it would take a \u201ccatastrophe\u201d for those who have so far refused to take the COVID-19 vaccine to change their minds and get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-21-jeff-zients-gov-jim-justice\/story?id=78659208\">an interview<\/a> on ABC\u2019s <span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Week<\/span><span class=\"s1\">,\u201d<\/span> Justice discussed the vaccination level in his state, noting that it is difficult to encourage young people to get vaccinated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">ABC\u2019s Martha Raddatz said, \u201cLet\u2019s go back to who\u2019s not getting vaccinated. The statistics will show it\u2019s poverty, race, and you just look at the map, it\u2019s a lot of red states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Justice noted, \u201cthere\u2019s some truth to that and everything because the red states probably have a lot of people that are very, very conservative in their thinking and they think, well, I don\u2019t have to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">He added, \u201cBut they\u2019re not thinking right. When it really boils right down to it, they\u2019re in a lottery to themselves. You know, we have a lottery that basically says, if you\u2019re vaccinated, we\u2019re going to give you stuff. Well, you\u2019ve got another lottery going on and it\u2019s the death lottery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Raddatz asked what would convince people who are more conservative to get vaccinated, to which Justice replied, \u201cwhat would put them over the edge is an awful lot of people die. The only way that\u2019s really going to happen is a catastrophe that none of us of want. And so we just got to keep trying though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Raddatz later discussed the United States vaccination levels with White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients, asking, \u201cwhat does it mean for the nation if we have all these unvaccinated people who say they\u2019re just not going to get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Zients did not give a direct answer, but rather said the administration will continue to \u201cdrive up the vaccination rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIf you\u2019re vaccinated, you\u2019re protected. If you\u2019re not vaccinated, you\u2019re not protected. And you\u2019re putting yourself at risk and your loved ones and those around you at risk,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, the important thing is for people to get vaccinated as soon as possible. When you\u2019re not vaccinated, you need to wear a mask and take these public safety precautions and get vaccinated as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The vaccination rate in the United States has not accelerated in the way that the Biden administration had originally hoped as states reopen and Americans take their health considerations into their own hands.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Biden administration did not hit its previously set July 4 vaccination goal. In May, Biden&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/05\/04\/fact-sheet-president-biden-to-announce-goal-to-administer-at-least-one-vaccine-shot-to-70-of-the-u-s-adult-population-by-july-4th\/\"><span class=\"s1\">announced<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;that he was setting a goal \u201cfor 70% of the U.S. adult population to have one vaccine shot and 160 million U.S. adults to be fully vaccinated by July 4 so that life can start to look closer to normal,\u201d per a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/05\/04\/fact-sheet-president-biden-to-announce-goal-to-administer-at-least-one-vaccine-shot-to-70-of-the-u-s-adult-population-by-july-4th\/\"><span class=\"s1\">White House fact sheet.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations\"><span class=\"s1\">CDC<\/span><\/a>, as of early Monday morning, 150,312,726 adults in the U.S. were fully vaccinated and 58.2% of the adult population was fully vaccinated. The numbers for adults who had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine were slightly higher, with 67.1% of the adult population reaching that mark and 173,194,895 adults having received one dose.
