Mencken says, \u201cAdversity introduces a man to himself.\u201d When that individual holds a position of responsibility, adversity also introduces that person to the broader public. The collapse of the condominium in Surfside, Florida, unintentionally reveals how susceptible President Joe Biden is to baseless media talking points, and how independent-minded Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is.<\/p>\n<p>The number of victims killed by the June 24 collapse of a condominium in Surfside, Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article252553998.html\">climbed to 24<\/a> on Saturday, as searchers continue to seek 124 missing persons.&nbsp;As the nation continues to mourn the rising death toll, the media successfully introduced the notion that a \u201cclimate crisis\u201d triggered the disaster to the highest levels of political power.<\/p>\n<p>In nationally <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MXcHKXIxRnA?t=1644\">televised<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/07\/01\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-surfside-condo-collapse\/\">remarks<\/a> on Thursday, President Joe Biden raised the possibility that climate change had a hand in the condo collapse:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>There are all kinds of discussions about whether or not they thought that water level rising \u2014 what impact it had. And interesting to me \u2014 I didn\u2019t raise it \u2014 but how many of the survivors and how many of the families talked about the impact of global warming. How much \u2014 and they didn\u2019t know exactly, but they talked about sea levels rising and about how \u2014 how there were \u2014 and, and the combination of that and the concern about incoming storm, incoming tropical storms.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LIVE: Biden Delivers Remarks in Surfside, Florida After Meeting Victims&#039; Families\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MXcHKXIxRnA?start=1644&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Biden somewhat qualified the suggestion \u2014 which came moments after he visited the site of the wreckage and comforted the survivors and their family members. \u201cI don\u2019t think there is, at this point, any definitive judgment as to why it collapsed, and what [could have been] done to prevent it from happening,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks meant that the media had likely injected the idea that climate change caused the devastating building collapse into the national conversation. Although a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/sea-level-rise-due-to-climate-change-eyed-as-contributing-factor-in-miami-building-collapse-172145539.html\">few<\/a> news outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2021\/06\/25\/rising-sea-levels-condo-collapse\/\">raised<\/a> the issue first, it got its largest audience on Tuesday, as CNN ran a chyron asking, \u201cCould Climate Crisis Have Contributed to Building Collapse?\u201d CNN anchor Erica Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1409880318576898064\">asked<\/a> Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm if the structural implosion of concrete should be blamed on chlorofluorocarbons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven what we know about the changing climate, given that you\u2019ve seen an increase in so called extraordinary tides, and the impact that that can have in areas like south Florida, do you think that climate would have played a role in that building\u2019s collapse?\u201d Hill inquired.<\/p>\n<p>Granholm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cnn-guest-refuses-to-take-the-bait-contradicts-don-lemon-on-slavery\">took the bait<\/a>, replying, \u201cObviously, we don\u2019t know fully, but we do know that the seas are rising. We know that we\u2019re losing inches and inches of beaches, not just in Florida, but all around.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.2272727272727\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Biden\u2019s Energy Secretary: \u201cWe don\u2019t know fully\u201d if climate change played a role in the Surfside building collapse: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S87uPM8pVK\">pic.twitter.com\/S87uPM8pVK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Townhall.com (@townhallcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1409880318576898064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Although viewers described CNN\u2019s linkage of tragedy with the Biden administration\u2019s political agenda as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-energy-secretary-blasted-for-ghoulish-suggestion-that-climate-change-may-have-played-role-in-condo-collapse\">ghoulish<\/a>,\u201d that did not rein in the legacy media from fueling the narrative with more unproven assertions.&nbsp;Time magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6077696\/surfside-collapse-miami-climate-risks\/\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cThe Surfside Collapse Is Renewing Focus on Climate Change Risks.\u201d Rolling Stone detailed the tragic building collapse under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/miami-beach-building-collapse-climate-change-1191989\/\">headline<\/a>, \u201cMiami\u2019s Climate Dystopia Gets Real\u201d and informed readers, \u201cSouth Florida\u2019s real estate is only going to get more deadly if we continue to ignore all the warning signs of a doomed coastline.\u201d The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/surfside-condo-climate-change-cost\/2021\/07\/01\/b6699a98-da76-11eb-9bbb-37c30dcf9363_story.html\">wrote<\/a> of \u201cthe unprecedented infrastructure challenges that climate change poses\u201d nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Erica Hill put her talking points into the mouth of the President of the United States. Curiously, the misinformation\u2019s trajectory did not garner coverage among Hill\u2019s fellow reporters. The same media could scarcely stop themselves from claiming that his predecessor, President Donald Trump, constantly rehashed Fox News headlines. CNN\u2019s \u201cReliable Sources\u201d ran an article,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/04\/22\/media\/president-trump-fox-news\/index.html\">titled<\/a> \u201cWatch President Trump repeat Fox News talking points.\u201d POLITICO gave Matthew Gertz of Media Matters a platform to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/01\/05\/trump-media-feedback-loop-216248\/\">declare<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve Studied the Trump-Fox Feedback Loop for Months. It\u2019s Crazier Than You Think.\u201d Newsweek posted a compilation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/trump-fox-and-friends-influence-video-twitter-tweets-fox-news-1274231\">purportedly<\/a> showing \u201c30 Times Trump Repeated \u2018Fox &amp; Friends\u2019 Talking Points in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But when Biden recycles assertions that his own energy secretary could not \u201cfully\u201d endorse, there is no media coverage. CNN has no interest in alerting viewers where Biden\u2019s self-serving comments originated; they just want him to keep repeating them.<\/p>\n<p>Compare his performance to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has served as the voice of reason during this time. DeSantis pushed back against attempts to politicize the tragedy, as well as all efforts to jump to a conclusion before the rubble is cleared.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis replied to an inquiry about whether climate change poses a \u201cviable\u201d explanation for the Surfside deaths by saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any evidence of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re not going to do is use this to advance any pre-existing agenda,\u201d Governor DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mHRCvob3Pfc&amp;t=288s\">told<\/a> Fox News host Martha McCallum on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the facts. We want the truth, and we want to know what needs to be done to be able to protect other folks that may be living in other types of buildings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ron DeSantis gives update on Miami condo collapse\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mHRCvob3Pfc?start=288&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>The president and the governor shared a moment of political and personal decency, as each complimented the other\u2019s full support for the victims in Surfside. DeSantis could easily grandstand or prematurely point fingers at some aspect of the federal government\u2019s response.
