They then asked how trustworthy news consumers found that outlet\u2019s coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The dueling media landscapes came out in a virtual tie: 41% of those who had a \u201cgreat deal of trust\u201d in their favorite media source said it was <em>not <\/em>part of the \u201cmainstream media,\u201d while 42% said it was \u201cmainstream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed that Democrats are almost twice as likely to trust the mainstream media as Republicans. While 66% of Americans of all political views relied on a \u201cmainstream\u201d source (53% of Republicans and 78% of Democrats), big fissures began to develop when asked about whether they could believe what they saw, heard, or read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans who say their main political news source is part of the mainstream media are far less likely to have a great deal of trust in it than those who say it is not part of the mainstream (24% vs. 46%),\u201d reported Pew. \u201cAmong Democrats, by contrast, those who see their main source as part of the mainstream are more likely than those who don\u2019t to have a great deal of trust in it (53% vs. 34%).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll\u2019s definition of \u201cmainstream media\u201d may conceal some support for conservative news outlets, as well. Pew allowed each individual to decide whether his news provider should be described as \u201cmainstream\u201d \u2014 leading to a significant disagreement about who deserves readers\u2019 belief and deference. \u201cThose who use HuffPost for political news are about twice as likely as those who don\u2019t to say the outlet is part of the mainstream news media (66% vs. 34%),\u201d Pew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/05\/07\/broad-agreement-in-u-s-even-among-partisans-on-which-news-outlets-are-part-of-the-mainstream-media\/\">reported<\/a>. \u201cAnd about a third of those who use Newsmax for political news say it is part of the mainstream media (31%), compared with just 10% of those who don\u2019t use it for news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The survey results track with previous polls that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpressinstitute.org\/publications\/reports\/survey-research\/how-we-studied-moral-values\/\">found<\/a> the vast majority of Americans embrace the \u201cidea that the more facts people have, the closer they will get to the truth.\u201d American readers are less concerned with the organization presenting the facts than they are the quality of the content \u2014 which may explain Americans\u2019 profound lack of trust in the U.S. media.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/americans-have-worlds-lowest-trust-in-media-survey\">Americans ranked dead<\/a> last out of 46 nations in the amount of confidence they place in media coverage, according to a recent poll. Nearly as many Americans strongly disagree that they trust the media (23%) as trust the media (29%), according to a survey released last month by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>Their hesitancy may result from the media\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/study-media-gives-biden-less-negative-coverage-than-any-president-on-record\">wild fluctuations<\/a> in coverage based on which party holds the White House, such as their changing position on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/from-impossible-to-credible-how-the-legacy-media-is-desperately-spinning-their-wuhan-lab-flip-flop\">COVID-19\u2019s origins<\/a>, or it could stem from the media repeating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/4-baseless-conspiracy-theories-the-media-continues-to-report-as-fact\">baseless conspiracy theories<\/a>. But the Associated Press blamed its readers for their crisis of confidence, lamenting the fact that \u201cnot all Americans universally embrace core journalism values.\u201d (Another way of expressing the same thought is: \u201cThe legacy media do not embrace core American values.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>The poll raises several intriguing questions about our media environment: If a media outlet has a sizable following and presents credible news, when does it become mainstream?
