Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) blasted the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the suspension of U.S. sprinter Sha\u2019Carri Richardson, who tested positive for THC \u2014 a chemical compound found in marijuana \u2014 during a drug test at the recent U.S. Olympic trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ocasio-Cortez called on the IOC to \u201creconsider its suspension\u201d of Richardson, as well as any other similarly \u201cpenalized\u201d athletes, arguing that the criminalization of cannabis is an \u201cinstrument\u201d of policies related to racism and colonialism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe criminalization and banning of cannabis is an instrument of racist and colonial policy,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. \u201cThe IOC should reconsider its suspension of Ms. Richardson and any athletes penalized for cannabis use. This ruling along w\/ IOC denial of swim caps for natural hair is deeply troubling. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ao1Yu8Ax9G\">https:\/\/t.co\/Ao1Yu8Ax9G<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1411063289350610947?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 2, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>As <\/span><span>the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/07\/02\/aoc-blasts-ioc-for-suspending-shacarri-richardson-over-marijuana-test\/\"><span>New York Post<\/span><\/a><span> noted, \u201c<\/span><span>Following the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) relaxed the threshold for what constitutes a positive marijuana test from 15 nanograms per milliliter to 150 nanograms per milliliter in an effort to detect use during competition rather than in the days and weeks before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHowever, marijuana remains on WADA\u2019s list of prohibited substances, with THC \u2014 the chemical Richardson tested positive for \u2014 classified as a so-called \u2018Substance of Abuse\u2019 along with cocaine, ecstasy and heroin due to their use in society outside of a competitive context,\u201d the Post added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s claims, colonialism was actually a driving factor behind the cultivation of cannabis. Indeed, one of the three primary crops George Washington grew at Mount Vernon was hemp. It wasn\u2019t until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 that cannabis products were required to be accurately labeled, which then opened the door to regulation and criminalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Ocasio-Cortez is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/racist-origins-marijuana-prohibition-legalization-2018-2\"><span>somewhat accurate<\/span><\/a><span> when it comes to racist elements of the history of cannabis criminalization, the argument that the IOC is therefore racist is arguably unfounded, given that it is applied to all athletes, regardless of race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe rules are clear, but this is heartbreaking on many levels; hopefully, her acceptance of responsibility and apology will be an important example to us all that we can successfully overcome our regrettable decisions, despite the costly consequences of this one to her,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usada.org\/sanction\/shacarri-richardson-accepts-doping-sanction\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart of Richardson\u2019s suspension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, Richardson herself did not make any accusation of racism against the IOC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHonestly, I just want to apologize for my actions,\u201d Richardson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/athletics\/news\/shacarri-richardson-today-show\/1l8ea59ojhn0u1axknfoqgps37\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI know what I did. I know what I\u2019m supposed to do, I\u2019m allowed not to do, and I still made that decision. Not making any excuse, or looking for any empathy in my case.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAt the Olympic trials, Richardson ran the 100 meters in 10.86 seconds, even though she informed the world after the race that her biological mother had passed away the week before,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-track-and-field-star-shacarri-richardson-suspended-one-month-for-positive-marijuana-test\"><span>The Daily Wire\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> Joe Morgan reported. \u201cRichardson admitted to using marijuana in order to cope with the loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe all have our different struggles, we all have our different things we deal with.
