Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) touted the importance of an infrastructure bill that is \u201cvery centered upon women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During NBC\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meet-press-june-27-2021-n1272470\"><span>Meet the Press<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d on Sunday, anchor Chuck Todd interviewed Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Ocasio-Cortez about the pending <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/06\/24\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-support-for-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-framework\/\"><span>Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework<\/span><\/a><span>. Both lawmakers stressed the importance of considering women in the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI believe that we also have to talk about this missing piece, which is the House, and I believe that\u2026 House Democrats are very committed to making sure that, in Sen. Cassidy\u2019s works, that infrastructure is very centered upon women,\u201d said Ocasio-Cortez. \u201cIn addition to a bridge, you need a babysitter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Full Ocasio-Cortez Interview: Biden Shouldn&#039;t Be &#039;Limited By Republicans&#039;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y9xJC7BexTo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>She also advised President Biden to tout his veto power: \u201cIn those areas where there is agreement, Republicans are more than welcome to join so that we can get this work on infrastructure done. But that doesn\u2019t mean the President should be limited by Republicans, particularly when we have a House majority, we have fifty Democratic senators and we have the White House.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s not just about a price tag, right? You can have an enormous price tag that is chock full of fossil fuel giveaways and doesn\u2019t spend that money in a way that is going to solve our problems,\u201d she explained. \u201cLikewise, you can also have an infrastructure plan that is too small, and it\u2019s so small that it doesn\u2019t invest in any meaningful way that people can really feel a positive impact in their everyday lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is our one big shot, not just in terms of family, child care, Medicare, but on climate change,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Ocasio-Cortez mentioned, Cassidy also stressed the importance of a female-centered infrastructure bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you go home and talk to constituents who are stuck in traffic for an hour and a half getting to work, and an hour and a half getting home, three hours a day that they don\u2019t spend with their family, they want these \u2014 they want a bridge coming to a town near them,\u201d he explained. \u201cMy wife says that roads and bridges are a woman\u2019s problem, if you will. Because oftentimes, it is the woman, aside from commuting to work, who\u2019s also taking children to school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey\u2019re doing the shopping,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd the more time she spends on that road, the less time she spends doing things of higher value. So if you speak to her, she\u2019s going to say, \u2018This is a good bill.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last week, the Biden administration reached a compromise with several members of the Senate on a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, which would emphasize physical infrastructure rather than government social programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joining Ocasio-Cortez, some progressive lawmakers rejected the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve said all along: no climate, no deal,\u201d said Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA). \u201cThe bipartisan framework doesn\u2019t get us there. So I agree with our leadership that this must be resolved in reconciliation.
