The rules apply for all three divisions and apply for all incoming and current student-athletes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is an important day for college athletes since they all are now able to take advantage of name, image, and likeness opportunities,\u201d NCAA President Mark Emmert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy\">said<\/a>. \u201cWith the variety of state laws adopted across the country, we will continue to work with Congress to develop a solution that will provide clarity on a national level. The current environment \u2014 both legal and legislative \u2014 prevents us from providing a more permanent solution and the level of detail student-athletes deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The decision was made by the NCAA\u2019s board of directors on Wednesday, and comes after last week\u2019s unanimous Supreme Court decision, ruling <\/span><span>in favor of a group of former and current college athletes over rules limiting compensation. <\/span><span>The new policy will be interim until federal legislation is adopted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/31737039\/ncaa-clears-student-athletes-pursue-name-image-likeness-deals\">ESPN<\/a>, the rules will allow athletes to make money off of their social media accounts, signing autographs, teaching camps or lessons, starting their own businesses, and being involved in advertising campaigns, among other avenues.<\/p>\n<p><span>According to the NCAA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cThe policy provides the following guidance to college athletes, recruits, their families and member schools:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in this type of activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image, and likeness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>For those in favor of college athletes receiving pay for their efforts, the policy is a step in the right direction, though it does avoid pay-for-play for athletes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe new policy preserves the fact college sports are not pay-for-play,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-adopts-interim-name-image-and-likeness-policy\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Division II Presidents Council chair Sandra Jordan, chancellor at the University of South Carolina Aiken. \u201cIt also reinforces key principles of fairness and integrity across the NCAA and maintains rules prohibiting improper recruiting inducements. It\u2019s important any new rules maintain these principles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ruling changes everything, and we\u2019re already starting to see the impact. Just a few minutes into the NIL rules being in place, the frenzy began.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hanna and Haley Cavinder \u2014 twin sisters on the Fresno State basketball team \u2014 signed as spokeswomen for Boost Mobile.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was really exciting that such a known company wanted to work with Hanna and me,\u201d Haley Cavinder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/31738893\/ncaa-athletes-cashing-name-image-likeness\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201c\u2026 This is a big switch for all student-athletes. Being able to use your name, image and likeness is something we all deserve, and I\u2019m really thankful the NCAA is finally passing this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bo Nix \u2014 starting quarterback at Auburn University \u2014 partnered with Milo\u2019s Sweet Tea on Thursday.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CQxadSLLoXr\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" readability=\"0\"><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/31738893\/ncaa-athletes-cashing-name-image-likeness\"><span>ESPN<\/span><\/a><span>, Will Ulmer \u2014 an offensive lineman at Marshall University \u2014 has been previously forced to play country music under the alias \u201cLucky Bill\u201d or turn down money from venues. The new rules will now allow Ulmer to play without having to hide his identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.232558139535\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Now that the NCAA will allow it, I will be playing live shows this year as Will Ulmer!!
