The shows that beat CNN\u2019s best-rated program include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tucker Carlson Tonight<\/li>\n<li>Hannity<\/li>\n<li>The Five<\/li>\n<li>The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>The Ingraham Angle<\/li>\n<li>Special Report with Bret Baier<\/li>\n<li>The Last Word with Lawrence O\u2019Donnell (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>Fox News Primetime<\/li>\n<li>Gutfeld!<\/li>\n<li>All In with Chris Hayes (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>Deadline White House (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>The Beat with Ari Melber (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>Outnumbered<\/li>\n<li>The Reidout (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>America\u2019s Newsroom<\/li>\n<li>The 11th Hour with Brian Williams (MSNBC)<\/li>\n<li>The Faulkner Focus<\/li>\n<li>America Reports<\/li>\n<li>Your World with Neil Cavuto<\/li>\n<li>Fox and Friends<\/li>\n<li>The Story with Martha McCallum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only two of CNN\u2019s shows \u2014 Cuomo\u2019s 9 p.m. ET program and \u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d \u2014 cracked 1 million viewers during the second quarter of the year, which ran from March 29 to June 25.<\/p>\n<p>CNN put the best possible construction on its ever-sliding rating by stating it had the greatest share of viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers. \u201cCNN continues to have the youngest audience in cable news,\u201d the network trumpeted in an announcement t<a href=\"https:\/\/cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/29\/cnn-beats-msnbc-in-prime-time-total-day-dayside-and-weekends-during-2q-in-demo\/\">itled<\/a> \u201cCNN Beats MSNBC in Prime Time, Total Day, Dayside and Weekends During 2Q in Demo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cTucker Carlson Tonight\u201d became the top-rated cable news show among CNN\u2019s targeted demographic, attracting 487,000 viewers in that age group. In all, seven of the top 10 cable news shows watched by the 25-54 demographic air on Fox News. MSNBC\u2019s \u201cRachel Maddow Show\u201d ranks fifth with the demo; CNN\u2019s offerings ranked nine (\u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d) and tenth (\u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d), respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News could not resist chiding its rival network while noting its continued ratings dominance. \u201cCNN\u2019s viewership fell to new lows since the start of the year, notching its lowest-rated month in both categories in total day since July 2019, with 70 percent declines in both primetime and total day across the board as well as its lowest-rated primetime demo since August 2015,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/press.foxnews.com\/2021\/06\/fox-news-channel-sweeps-total-day-and-primetime-viewers-and-25-54-demographic-in-the-second-quarter\/\">said<\/a> FNC in an official statement.&nbsp;\u201cOf all news networks, CNN is down the most year to year, shedding more than half of its audience with both total day and primetime demo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC also piled on CNN, noting in a <a href=\"https:\/\/viewer.nbcumv.com\/mediavillage\/interactive\/2929fed4187b40648b79a9839e70e91fproduct169208\/index.html#\/brand\/283f55c2-f92b-4425-afc2-1d901cd2c77b\/press-releases\/0211e301-108f-485d-a6bd-b47326f0f057\">press release<\/a> that, in all, 13 of its shows bested their CNN competitors in a head-to-head match:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><em>The following shows topped CNN for the quarter in total viewer: \u201cWay Too Early with Kasie Hunt\u201d at 5am for the 15th straight quarter; \u201cStephanie Ruhle Reports\u2019\u2019 at 9am for the 18th straight quarter; \u201cHallie Jackson Reports\u201d at 10am for the 17th straight quarter; \u201cCraig Melvin Reports\u201d at 11am for quarter; \u201cAndrea Mitchell Reports\u201d at 12pm for the quarter; \u201cMTP Daily\u201d at 1pm for the quarter; \u201cDeadline: White House\u201d from 4pm-6pm (\u201cDeadline\u201d was also #1 at 4pm among total viewers), topping CNN for the 16th straight quarter; \u201cThe Beat with Ari Melber\u201d at 6pm for the 16th straight quarter; \u201cThe ReidOut\u201d at 7pm for the 4th straight quarter; \u201cAll In with Chris Hayes\u201d at 8pm for the 18th straight quarter; \u201cThe Last Word with Lawrence O\u2019Donnell\u201d at 10pm for the 24th straight quarter and \u201cThe 11th Hour with Brian Williams\u201d at 11pm for the 19th straight quarter. On Saturdays, \u201cVELSHI\u201d from 8am-10am beat CNN for three of the last four quarters.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The takeaway<\/strong>: CNN thrived in the first quarter because of one event: the January 6 Capitol riot.
