Hussman, who is also an alumnus, told NPR he was given pause by some prominent scholars\u2019 criticism that Hannah-Jones distorted the historical record in arguing that the protection of slavery was one of the Founding Fathers\u2019 primary motivations in seeking independence from the British.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case inspired a bruising debate over race, journalism and academic freedom. It led both to national headlines and anger and distress among many Black faculty members and students at UNC. It could\u2019ve been me, if I wasn\u2019t white. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RlGAOe7Vx4\">pic.twitter.com\/RlGAOe7Vx4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 annabelle (she\/her) (@annabellef17) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annabellef17\/status\/1410394968406044673?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt has taken longer than I imagined, but I am deeply appreciative that the board has voted in favor of our school\u2019s recommendation,\u201d wrote Susan King, dean of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media in response to the trustees\u2019 decision. \u201cI knew that when the board reviewed her tenure dossier and realized the strength of her teaching, service and professional vision they would be moved to grant tenure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/press-release\/nikole-hannah-jones-issues-statement-on-unc-board-of-trustees-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued<\/a> a statement in response:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p><em>\u201cI want to&nbsp;acknowledge the tremendous outpouring of support I have received from students, faculty, colleagues, and the general public over the last month \u2013 including the young&nbsp;people&nbsp;who showed up today at the Board of Trustees meeting, putting themselves at physical risk. I am honored and grateful for and inspired by you all. I know that this vote would not have occurred without you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cToday\u2019s outcome and the actions of the past month are about more than just me. This fight is about ensuring the journalistic and academic freedom of Black writers, researchers,&nbsp;teachers, and students. We must ensure that&nbsp;our work is protected and able to proceed free from the risk of repercussions, and we are not there yet. Black Americans have fought to make them true.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The article argues that the American Revolution was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/11\/magazine\/an-update-to-the-1619-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motivated by the urge to protect slavery<\/a>\u201d and that plantation slavery was the model for modern American capitalism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In October 2020, a group of scholars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/profoundly-flawed-group-of-scholars-call-for-pulitzer-prize-to-be-revoked-from-1619-project-author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demanded<\/a> that Hannah-Jones be stripped of her Pulitzer Prize for her essay, which they described as \u201cprofoundly flawed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe call on the Pulitzer Prize Board to rescind the 2020 Prize for Commentary awarded to Nikole Hannah-Jones for her lead essay in \u2018The 1619 Project,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nas.org\/blogs\/article\/pulitzer-board-must-revoke-nikole-hannah-jones-prize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the statement begins<\/a>, which was signed by 21 professors, academics, and historians. \u201cThat essay was entitled, \u2018Our democracy\u2019s founding ideals were false when they were written.\u2019 But it turns out the article itself was false when written, making a large claim that protecting the institution of slavery was a primary motive for the American Revolution, a claim for which there is simply no evidence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The New York Times eventually had to retract portions of the 1619 Project\u2019s claims after scholars <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/24\/scholars-are-eviscerating-the-new-york-times-1619-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eviscerated<\/a> its claims.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Among the historians who excoriated the 1619 Project was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/not-the-way-to-do-history-princeton-university-historian-blasts-1619-project-as-historical-sloppiness-unworthy-of-pulitzer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allen C.
