The department also awarded grades for \u201cindependent studies\u201d that did not involve any classes. Other times, grades assigned by actual classes were mysteriously changed by someone within the department later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLax Departmental administrative oversight and practices\u201d thwarted investigators from fully documenting the extent of the fraud, the report said. But Mary Willingham, an academic advisor who blew the whistle, said, \u201cSome of these college students could read at a second or third grade level\u2026 Students were taking classes that really didn\u2019t exist. They were called independent studies at that time and they just had to write a paper\u2026 There was no attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One student took a high-level 400-level AFAM course and received a B+, even though he later had to enroll in \u201cEnglish 100, Basic Writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another student\u2019s college <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2591342\/How-did-146-word-essay-Rosa-Parks-A-UNC-football-playerss-shocking-term-paper-released-whistleblower-alleges-widespread-academic-fraud.html\">term paper<\/a> on Rosa Parks, clocking in at one paragraph long, read in its entirety:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><em>On the evening of December Rosa Parks decided that she was going to sit in the white people section on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. During this time blacks had to give up there seats to whites when more whites got on the bus. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. Her and the bus driver began to talk and the conversation went like this. \u2018Let me have those front seats\u2019 said the driver. She didn\u2019t get up and told the driver that she was tired of giving her seat to white people. \u2018I\u2019m going to have you arrested,\u2019 said the driver. \u2018You may do that,\u2019 Rosa Parks responded. Two white policemen came in and Rosa Parks asked them \u2018why do you all push us around?\u2019 The police officer replied and said \u2018I don\u2019t know, but the law is the law and you\u2019re under arrest.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fraud, it turned out, went back decades.<\/p>\n<p>Many, but not all, of the students taking the sham AFAM courses were student athletes.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal was so devastating to UNC that in 2015, its accreditor put it on academic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/unc-academic-scandal-leaves-university-in-peril-beyond-athletics\/\">probation<\/a> for \u201cnon-compliance with the principle of\u2026 academic integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Department chair Julius Nyang\u2019oro was charged with felony fraud for allegedly accepting pay for a class he did not teach, but the charges were dropped. He resigned as chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply disturbed by what we have learned in the course of our review. Our review has exposed numerous violations of professional trust,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>But it pledged to recover: \u201cWith new departmental leadership and support from the departmental faculty, buttressed by new policies, procedures, and active faculty governance, this department, we believe, will emerge stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school issued \u201cOur <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinacommitment.unc.edu\/\">Commitment<\/a>: Taking Action and Moving Forward Together: A guide to review, response and reform at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u201d to overcome the serious mar on its reputation.<\/p>\n<p>But just a few years later, the school\u2019s faculty was pushing for the hiring of the disgraced journalist Hannah-Jones, and lashing out at the university\u2019s board of governors, who pointed out that she had few academic qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>The position is Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism within the school\u2019s Hussman School of Journalism and Media.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times\u2019 1619 Project quickly came under scrutiny for historical inaccuracies, first from the World Socialist Web Site, and later from numerous prestigious scholars across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>A group of historians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/historians-tell-nyt-your-1619-project-is-wrong-nyt-take-a-hike\">wrote<\/a> to the Times that \u201cthe project asserts that the founders declared the colonies\u2019 independence of Britain \u2018in order to ensure slavery would continue.\u2019 This is not true. If supportable, the allegation would be astounding \u2014 yet every statement offered by the project to validate it is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A historian who worked as a fact-checker for the Times said she \u201cvigorously disputed\u201d the series\u2019 central claim that \u201cOne critical reason that the colonists declared their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery,\u201d but she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-fact-checker-warned-nyt-about-their-inaccurate-1619-project-the-times-didnt-listen\">ignored<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Times later issued a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/03\/14\/new-york-times-corrects-the-1619-project-but-its-still-a-giant-lie\/\">clarification<\/a>\u201d partially dialing back the claim. Hannah-Jones also claimed that she had never said 1619, the date she says the first slaves arrived in America, was the \u201ctrue founding\u201d of the country, and the Times quietly <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2020\/09\/23\/1619-project-nikole-hannah-jones-1776-founding-race-new-york-times\/\">removed<\/a> language that claimed the project \u201caim[s] to reframe the country\u2019s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
