The fact check said a McAuliffe campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OekHgreWU_0\">web ad<\/a> took comments from his Republican opponent Glenn Youngkin during a 2017 panel discussion out of context to make it seem like Youngkin approved of McAullife\u2019s record during his first stint as Virginia governor from 2014 to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn assessing Youngkin\u2019s comments, it\u2019s also important to consider his role as moderator and McAuliffe\u2019s role as a panelist. Moderators are typically neutral and polite to panelists,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210629055127\/https:\/vpm.org\/news\/articles\/23224\/politifact-va-mcauliffe-misleadingly-claims-youngkin-praised-him\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retracted<\/a> PolitiFact fact check stated. \u201cSo, contrary to McAuliffe\u2019s assertion, Youngkin\u2019s 2017 words do not prove he was a \u2018big fan\u2019 of the former governor\u2019s economic policies, or that his current criticism of McAuliffe\u2019s stewardship is a flip flop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VPM abruptly retracted the PolitiFact fact check on Tuesday afternoon \u201cdue to a substantial omission in our reporting,\u201d the outlet said in a tweet. \u201cWe apologize for our error and will publish a retraction notice on the VPM site.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.358744394619\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We\u2019ve retracted a politifact piece on a McAuliffe campaign ad due to a substantial omission in our reporting.<\/p>\n<p>We apologize for our error and will publish a retraction notice on the VPM site.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 VPM (@myVPM) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/myVPM\/status\/1409937912058241026?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>VPM\u2019s tweet was posted at 2:12 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. As of the publication of this article neither VPM or PolitiFact have published any additional information on the reasons for retracting the fact check.<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact has not returned requests for comment asking what the substantial omission in their reporting was that led to the fact check retraction. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/20\/politifact-retracts-lab-leak-fact-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: PolitiFact Quietly Retracts \u2018Pants On Fire\u2019 Lab Leak Fact Check)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Youngkin campaign spokesman Matt Wolking told the Daily Caller News Foundation that PolitiFact\u2019s retraction doesn\u2019t change the fact that the McAuliffe campaign ad was deceptively edited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing can change the fact that PolitiFact examined the deceptively edited video released by Terry McAuliffe\u2019s campaign and concluded it spliced and diced things out of context in order to mislead viewers,\u201d Wolking said. \u201cTerry McAuliffe\u2019s campaign is built on lies because he has nothing to offer Virginians after 40 years as a political hatchet man and politician pretending to be a businessman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Less than an hour after VPM retracted the PolitiFact story Tuesday afternoon, McAuliffe published a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TerryMcAuliffe\/status\/1409949234313445384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">tweet<\/a> saying Youngkin was once proud of his economic record before he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/virginia-politics\/former-carlyle-executive-glenn-youngkin-joins-race-for-virginia-governor\/2021\/01\/26\/27793d92-6006-11eb-9430-e7c77b5b0297_story.html\">launched<\/a> his gubernatorial campaign in early 2021.<\/p>\n<p>McAuliffe\u2019s tweet linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/glenn-youngkin-terry-mcauliffe-virginia-governor-economy-2021-6\">Business Insider<\/a> story published June 16 that states: \u201cGlenn Youngkin was for Terry McAuliffe\u2019s economy before he was against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin&nbsp;has stated in recent months&nbsp;that Virginia\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glennyoungkin\/status\/1373820541828751363?lang=en\">economy<\/a>&nbsp;is \u201cin the ditch\u201d due to McAuliffe and Northam\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The Business Insider story highlighted three instances between 2017 and 2020 to back up its claim that Youngkin was for McAuliffe\u2019s economy before entering politics.<\/p>\n<p>The first example provided in the story was the 2017 panel discussion that PolitiFact\u2019s retracted fact check said was not sufficient evidence to prove that Youngkin supported McAuliffe\u2019s economic record.<\/p>\n<p>The Business Insider story also highlighted comments Youngkin made in 2019 and 2020 about Virginia\u2019s economy, both of which were made long after McAuliffe\u2019s first term as Virginia governor was over in early 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The McAuliffe campaign did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
