He asked the famed director of \u201cReservoir Dogs,\u201d \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d \u201cKill Bill,\u201d and a number of other modern classics about an encounter he had with a reporter at the 2019 Cannes film festival when she complained that actress Margot Robbie\u2019s part in \u201cOnce Upon a Time Hollywood\u201d wasn\u2019t big enough. Tarantino replied that he rejected that hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always really appreciated the way you\u2019ve pushed back when everyone\u2019s tried to stifle you, shut you up, shame you, bully you, corral your artistic license \u2014 they tried it with the last one, with \u2018Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,\u2019 some bullsh** about Margot Robbie doesn\u2019t have enough lines,\u201d said Maher. \u201cYou do what I wish other people would do: instead of apologizing like a little pu*** you say, \u2018I don\u2019t agree with your assessment.\u2019 What\u2019s so hard about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eight-time Oscar winner <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GComixxx\/status\/1409320057914609664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1409320057914609664%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fboundingintocomics.com%2F2021%2F06%2F28%2Fquentin-tarantino-calls-out-the-rampant-ideological-climate-of-modern-hollywood%2F\">responded<\/a> by lamenting how important pushing political agendas has become in the entertainment business these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has become a thing that\u2019s gone on, especially in this last year, where ideology is more important than art,\u201d Tarantino said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWay more. Certainly to the awards,\u201d Maher agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Tarantino went on, \u201cIdeology trumps art. Ideology trumps individual effort. Ideology trumps good. Ideology trumps entertaining,\u201d Tarantino said as the audience applauded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s two kinds of movies\u2014virtue signalers and super hero movies,\u201d Maher summed matters up. Tarantino agreed and said that he believes Hollywood\u2019s current woke obsession won\u2019t last forever. \u201cJust looking at the \u201940s, even though it was wartime, that was also when you had film noir. Even with the Hays Code! You had these dark, dark stories being told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, some left-leaning media outlets weren\u2019t pleased with this conversation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/quentin-tarantino-and-bill-maher-whine-about-how-movies-are-too-pc\">Daily Beast<\/a> said of the interview, \u201cGiven the extraordinary egos in play, there was a high likelihood of this HBO t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate being insufferable, and about how the current state of cinema is too politically correct. And \u2014 surprise \u2014 it was just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehook.com\/daily_brief\/movies\/quentin-tarantino-real-time-films\">Inside Hook<\/a> took issue with Maher\u2019s characterization of the state of cinema.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs befits a discussion between a guy who\u2019s taken to decrying \u2018cancel culture\u2019 and a filmmaker who\u2019s rarely shied away from controversy, the conversation also veered into the ways politics and cinema can collide,\u201d its story said, adding, \u201cWhile Maher has made the same argument about the year\u2019s Oscar nominees already this year, it\u2019s also worth stating that it\u2019s no more correct now than it was then.
