It may have been the result of a lab-leak \u2014 and we think highly likely it is,\u201d Adm. Brett Giroir told the subcommittee, as&nbsp;The Daily Caller <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/29\/covid-19-coronavirus-lab-leak-china-wuhan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All four of the experts \u2014 which included Dr. David Asher, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, Dr. Richard Muller, emeritus professor of physics at the University of California Berkeley and Dr. Steven Quay, founder of Atossa Therapeutics \u2014 answered \u201cyes\u201d when asked if the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 started in Wuhan lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA natural zoonosis has two processes,\u201d Quay said. \u201cIt jumps into humans but it can\u2019t do very well\u2026 but then it\u2019s building up its repertoire, it\u2019s learning how to infect humans. And then finally, and this takes a year to 18 months. So here, it was human-to-human from the get-go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat simply indicated gain-of-function,\u201d Muller added. \u201cThe fact that it was human from the get-go implies gain-of-function. There\u2019s no way that we know that could happen [naturally].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asher, though, said he has no knowledge about whether the virus was released on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were working on a program related to synthetic biology and gain-of-function using serial passage revolutionary technology approaches quite publicly,\u201d said Asher, a former State Department official. \u201cOf course they were working on dual-use research of concerns. It\u2019s called DURC. And the DURC, in this case, if it gets out of a lab and it\u2019s not contained promptly, could result in a weapons-like release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether they deliberately did it, I have very little sense they did. But were they deliberately working on developing the capability to use advanced pathogen genetic capabilities for war in a way that no one has seen ever employed? Yeah they were. Of course they are,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers have long insisted that the government should investigate the theory that the virus leaked from the laboratory in Wuhan. Earlier this month, GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee claimed that \u201csignificant circumstantial evidence\u201d exists showing that the virus first emerged from a leak at China\u2019s Wuhan Institute of Virology.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers, headed by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who is the top Republican on the committee, said in a report that China has not cooperated with efforts to find out where the virus originated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational efforts to discover the true source of the virus, however, have been stymied by a lack of cooperation from the People\u2019s Republic of China,\u201d \u200bthey wrote\u200b in the report\u200b.&nbsp;\u201cNevertheless, significant circumstantial evidence raises serious concerns that the COVID-19 outbreak may have been a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The report also said the People\u2019s Republic of China\u2019s (PRC) military had \u201cinvolvement\u201d in the lab and rejected the long-reported claim that the virus came from bats. \u201cBy contrast, little circumstantial evidence has emerged to support the PRC\u2019s claim that COVID-19 was a natural occurrence, having jumped from some other species to human,\u201d \u200bthe lawmakers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said last week it is possible the virus had a \u201clab-based origin.\u201d At a Senate hearing, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) asked CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky how she thinks the pandemic began. \u201cI don\u2019t believe I\u2019ve seen enough data, individual data for me to be able to comment on that,\u201d Walensky said.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy then asked about the \u201cpossibilities\u201d of where the virus originated: \u201cCertainly the possibilities of, that most coronaviruses that we know of are of origin from, that have infected the population \u2014 SARS CoV-1, MERS \u2014 generally come from an animal origin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre there any other possibilities?\u201d Kennedy asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly a lab-based origin is one possibility,\u201d Walensky said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
