She attempted to continue playing, but Williams dropped to her knees in the seventh game, forcing the umpire to come over and Williams retired.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She waved to the cheering Wimbledon crowd as she fought back tears on her way out.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.1317073170732\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We&#8217;re heartbroken for you, Serena.<\/p>\n<p>Our seven-time singles champion is forced to retire from The Championships 2021 through injury<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Wimbledon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Wimbledon<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vpcW1UN78s\">pic.twitter.com\/vpcW1UN78s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Wimbledon\/status\/1409950267114758148?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg,\u201d Williams <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stu_fraser\/status\/1409989537737150468\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cMy love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on Centre Court so meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on \u2013 and off \u2013 the court meant the world to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>This marks the first time Williams has not made it past the first round of Wimbledon, and just the second time in her illustrious career where she\u2019s had to retire from a match at a major.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf course I\u2019m so sad for Serena, she\u2019s a great champion,\u201d Sasnovich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/31733041\/serena-williams-wimbledon-stopping-injury\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIt happens sometimes in tennis, but all the best for her and her recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Williams is a seven-time Wimbledon champion and was in pursuit of her 24th Grand Slam title before having to retire. Her last Grand Slam title was in 2017 at the Australian Open.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It was the second match of the day that ended because of injury.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier in the day, Adrian Mannarino suffered a knee injury in his match against Roger Federer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first two days of Wimbledon have been impacted by rain, causing the roof to be closed at Center Court. Federer felt that the closed roof may have played a part in the conditions of the grass.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do feel it feels a tad more slippery, maybe, under the roof,\u201d Federer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/31733474\/roger-federer-advances-wimbledon-adrian-mannarino-retires-injury-slipping-grass\">said<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s just a gut feeling. You do have to move very, very carefully out there. If you push too hard in the wrong moments, you do go down. I do feel it\u2019s drier during the day. With the wind and all that stuff, it takes the moist out of the grass. But this is obviously terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is obviously terrible that it\u2019s back-to-back matches, and it hits Serena as well,\u201d Federer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2021\/06\/29\/serena-williams-wimbledon-slip-centre-court-injury\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=wp_main\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cOh, my God, I can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Over the weekend, Williams let it be known that she will not be participating at the Tokyo Olympics in July.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/summer\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/31718541\/serena-williams-says-not-going-tokyo-olympics\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI don\u2019t really want to \u2014 I don\u2019t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI have not thought about it. In the past [the Olympics] has been a wonderful place for me. I really haven\u2019t thought about it, so I\u2019m going to keep not thinking about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chris Widmaier \u2014 the U.S. Tennis Association spokesman \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serena-williams-tokyo-europe-wimbledon-tennis-08dc9350e07b55fa040423bcaa500803\">told<\/a> the Associated Press that they respect Williams\u2019 decision.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p><em><span>\u201cUltimately, the decision to participate in the Games is an individual one, and as we emerge from the pandemic, we recognize and respect the personal decisions made by our top athletes regarding participation in the Tokyo Games.
