Biden, who had just announced a bipartisan infrastructure plan costing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/whats-in-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-plan-11624562676\">$1.2 trillion<\/a> over eight years, said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-backtrack-president-now-says-he-will-not-veto-infrastructure-deal\">he would veto the bill<\/a> if legislators didn\u2019t also pass a separate \u201canti-poverty\u201d bill. Biden\u2019s comments could hardly have been clearer: He instructed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to pass both bills \u201cpromptly and in tandem. Let me emphasize that: <em>and in tandem<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s actual \u201cclarification\u201d came just minutes later, when two reporters asked what he meant by \u201cin tandem.\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/06\/24\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-deal\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cI expect that in the coming months this summer, before the fiscal year is over, that we will have voted on this bill, the infrastructure bill, as well as voted on the budget resolution. But if only one comes to me, this is the only one that comes to me, I\u2019m not signing it. It\u2019s in tandem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments had Republicans, who had just crossed the aisle at great political risk, seeing red.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo deal by extortion!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1408433159226728461\">tweeted<\/a> Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). \u201cIt was never suggested to me during these negotiations that President Biden was holding hostage the bipartisan infrastructure proposal unless a liberal reconciliation package was also passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.7456445993031\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No deal by extortion!<\/p>\n<p>It was never suggested to me during these negotiations that President Biden was holding hostage the bipartisan infrastructure proposal unless a liberal reconciliation package was also passed.  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JgYFma6oI0\">https:\/\/t.co\/JgYFma6oI0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1408433159226728461?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 25, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Susan Collins (R-ME) made similar statements that President Biden had never said the two bills\u2019 fates were intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>Biden couldn\u2019t stand the backlash and reversed himself over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a press conference after announcing the bipartisan agreement, I indicated that I would refuse to sign the infrastructure bill if it was sent to me without my Families Plan and other priorities, including clean energy,\u201d wrote Biden in a press statement Saturday. He added that his comments \u201ccreated the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u2019s Eugene Robinson was practically alone in calling the statement the problem it was. \u201cWhen the explanation is that much longer than what you originally said, you\u2019ve got a problem,\u201d he said on Tuesday\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe.\u201d &nbsp;The problem, he said, was that Biden was \u201csaying the quiet part out loud.\u201d That is, Biden had hoodwinked moderate Republicans for his own purposes and gotten in trouble for giving up the game.<\/p>\n<p>But few had his honesty. The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bills-government-and-politics-ea608ba49052324acc0c2b8549f615cf\">reported<\/a> Biden\u2019s statement thus: \u201cAiming to preserve fragile infrastructure deal, Biden says he didn\u2019t intend to suggest veto unless Dem bill passes, too.\u201d Axios ran with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/biden-backtracks-infrastructure-veto-threat-07479058-a79b-478f-8236-990faeb42e37.html\">headline<\/a>, \u201cBiden walks back implied veto threat on infrastructure deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suggest? Implied? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines \u201cimply\u201d as a phrase used \u201cto express indirectly.\u201d Biden threatened Congress undeniably, unequivocally, and with a creepy grin plastered on his face. Yet the media let Biden\u2019s strange explanation stand.<\/p>\n<p>Several news outlets claimed the whole thing was just a misunderstanding: Biden never threatened to veto the bill. NBC News further gaslighted its audience by headlining the AP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/biden-remark-infrastructure-measure-was-not-intended-be-veto-threat-n1272458\">story<\/a>, \u201cBiden: Remark on infrastructure measure was not intended to be veto threat.\u201d The Voice of America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/usa\/us-politics\/no-veto-threat-infrastructure-deal-biden-says\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cPresident Joe Biden said Saturday that he didn\u2019t mean to suggest he would veto the bill unless Congress also passed a larger package to expand\u201d the welfare state.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Joe Biden said that \u2014 but the fact that the government says something does not mean it is true; readers count on journalists to give them the truth. Yet many of the stories did not even quote Biden\u2019s clear veto threat.<\/p>\n<p>Other news outlets at NBC tried to blame the backlash on <em>Republicans<\/em>. On the \u201cToday\u201d show Monday, White House correspondent Monica Alba <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9zH2mdHjY7k\">said<\/a> that Biden walked back his remarks \u201cafter Republicans threatened to derail the deal with senators of both parties just <em>hours<\/em> after it was struck Thursday\u201d; meanwhile, the screen showed b-roll footage of Biden speaking as President Abraham Lincoln looked on thoughtfully from a painting. Alba then proceeded to accuse President Trump of \u201clashing out\u201d and \u201crepeating recycled lies about the election he lost\u201d during his \u201crevenge tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"White House Scrambles To Contain Fallout After Biden\u2019s Comments On Infrastructure Deal\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9zH2mdHjY7k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Still others minimized the importance of Biden\u2019s statements. The New York Times said Biden\u2019s \u201cstray comments\u201d may \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/26\/us\/politics\/biden-infrastructure.html\">not seem like much<\/a>,\u201d but lamented that they \u201cupended a political win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most legacy media outlets simply said that Biden had to tidy up his remarks \u2014 not that he flip-flopped, retracted, or retreated, all of which would have been more accurate. The Hill informed its readers that \u201cPresident Biden on Saturday <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/560403-biden-says-it-was-not-my-intent-to-imply-he-would-veto-bipartisan\">sought to clarify<\/a> remarks.\u201d CBS News said, \u201cThe White House is having to clarify its position,\u201d in a video that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8vVAYVpSh8I\">said<\/a> Biden would \u201chonor $1.2 trillion infrastructure deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To her credit, Weija Jiang of \u201cCBS This Morning\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vARIyn8nKQc\">said<\/a> somewhat sarcastically that \u201cthe president clarified he didn\u2019t actually mean what he said\u201d and that Biden \u201creversed his comments.\u201d That is the most critical reporting Biden endured during his ongoing honeymoon with the media.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that to President Donald Trump. Trump regularly went off-script during his massive 2016 campaign rallies and, when his handlers sent out messages \u201cclarifying\u201d his remarks, Trump doubled down on his version of his remarks. The media interpreted each iteration as a new flip-flop from the Trump campaign, and they interpreted every word that came out of Trump\u2019s mouth in the most damning way possible \u2014 literally if that sounded most discrediting, figuratively if that worked better.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven days after the 2016 election, NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/president-trumps-first-100-days\/here-are-new-policy-stances-donald-trump-has-taken-election-n684946\">ran<\/a> a story titled \u201cTracking President Trump\u2019s Flip-Flops\u201d \u2014 many of which were not in any way reversals or even in conflict with his previous statements. When Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied that President Trump implied that Kirsten Gillibrand traded sexual favors for campaign contributions \u2014 an interpretation not obvious from the quotation in question \u2014 The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/in-the-gutter-white-house-again-denies-what-many-think-trump-meant\/2017\/12\/12\/3ab1a8aa-df5c-11e7-bbd0-9dfb2e37492a_story.html\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cWhite House again denies what many think Trump meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one asked about President Trump\u2019s \u201cintent.\u201d His remarks never \u201cclarified\u201d those of his campaign workers.
