He skipped dinner and headed to bed early, but the next morning he still wasn\u2019t himself. The nausea had lifted but it was replaced with sweats and hot flashes,\u201d Tate wrote, adding, \u201cIt was when we started googling the symptoms that the penny dropped: my son was going through menopause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tate took her daughter to a gender clinic that she has been frequenting for years since her daughter was \u201cborn a girl\u201d but knew \u201cfrom a young age that inside he definitely wasn\u2019t a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As age 12, she said, her daughter knew she wasn\u2019t a girl.<\/p>\n<p>Since her child can\u2019t medically transition at just 15 years old, Tate put her on puberty blockers. When the child turns 16, Tate said she will put her on testosterone, which could impact her fertility, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouischildrens.org\/conditions-treatments\/transgender-center\/puberty-blockers\">according<\/a> to St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Tate evidenced her daughter being a boy by citing the girl\u2019s willingness to be injected with \u201ca needle that looks big enough to sedate a horse\u201d even though she\u2019s \u201cusually needle-phobic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drug is administered via a needle that looks big enough to sedate a horse, and it was watching my usually needle-phobic son calmly accepting his first injection a few weeks ago with barely a wince that gave me a new appreciation for how deeply he is ready for his transition to progress,\u201d the journalist wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The drug prevents the girl\u2019s body from making oestrogen, Tate said. \u201cOnce that oestrogen tide goes out, that\u2019s when a short and sharp menopause can hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from that, the only side effect is potential bone brittleness from a loss of calcium, so we\u2019re being vigilant about ensuring he\u2019s keeping up his vitamins,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouischildrens.org\/conditions-treatments\/transgender-center\/puberty-blockers\">According<\/a> to St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital, here are some of the symptoms of puberty blockers:<\/p>\n<p><em>Possible long-term side effects of puberty blockers<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Lower bone density. To protect against this, we work to make sure every patient gets enough exercise, calcium and vitamin D, which can help keep bones healthy and strong. We also closely monitor patients\u2019 bone density.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Delayed growth plate closure, leading to slightly taller adult height.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Less development of genital tissue, which may limit options for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouischildrens.org\/conditions-treatments\/transgender-center\/gender-affirming-surgery\">gender affirming surgery<\/a>(bottom surgery) later in life.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Other possible long-term side effects that are not yet known.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Possible short-term side effects of puberty blockers<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Headache, fatigue, insomnia and muscle aches.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Changes in weight, mood or breast tissue.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Spotting or irregular periods (in menstruating patients whose periods are not completely suppressed by puberty blockers).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, <a href=\"https:\/\/childrensnational.org\/news-and-events\/childrens-newsroom\/2020\/neurological-impacts-of-puberty-suppression\">according<\/a> to Children\u2019s National, \u201clittle is known about how this standard of care treatment affects an adolescent\u2019s brain development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though her child is facing harmful medical affects from the drugs she\u2019s being injected with, Tate argues the benefits of improved mental health are worth it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere he was once depressed, disengaged and \u2013 as doctors put it \u2013 it \u2018ambivalent about living\u2019, he is now happy, comfortable in his own skin, and optimistic about his future,\u201d she claimed. \u201cWhy would anyone want to deny him that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a parent, it\u2019s been a massive adjustment from having a pony-loving, curly-haired daughter to the masculine young man lives [sic] in my house and towers over me,\u201d the journalist said. \u201cBut what I know about parenting is that I\u2019m just the custodian to these children living in my home. I\u2019m here to love them and do what I can to help them to grow into whoever they know themselves to be. Because what the world needs is more people who are truly comfortable being themselves \u2013 and who accept and celebrate others for doing the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that he\u2019s been through those symptoms once, my son won\u2019t have to endure them again.
