Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, by over nine points with 82% reporting.<\/p>\n<p>One of the primary <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HotlineJosh\/status\/1409542927278350342?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reasons<\/a> is quite simple: the people of New York City are sick and tired of crime. Eric Adams promised to take a tough approach to the streets and Maya Wiley called for defunding the police. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/25\/defund-the-police-george-floyd-minneapolis-police-department-washington-square-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Rising Crime Forces Liberals To Reckon With Their Stance On The Police)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adams\u2019 lead is not only an affront to his more progressive contenders, but to Mayor Bill de Blasio, who touted the importance of defunding the police despite his city grappling with a surge in crime. A Siena College poll from June 2020 found that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/30\/majority-new-york-voters-disaprove-defund-police-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">60%<\/a> of New Yorkers disagreed with defunding the police.<\/p>\n<p>An increase in crime is not localized to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/29\/new-york-city-defund-the-police-murder-increase-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York City<\/a>, however. In 2020 and continuing into 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/dc-police-union-washington-dc-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violent crime<\/a> in America\u2019s cities <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/baltimore-chicago-milwaukee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surged<\/a> in ways that were unseen in over three decades, with black people making up a majority of the victims. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/obama-against-defund-police-slogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Cities That Pushed For Defunding The Police Reckon With Record-High Crime Rates)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.9210526315789\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Incredible stats, particularly in Portland <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tX1ru4zx7k\">pic.twitter.com\/tX1ru4zx7k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1409459540433817603?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A YouGov <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/08\/american-defund-police-protests-george-floyd-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poll<\/a> taken shortly after the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement began found that only 16% of Americans agreed with the idea. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/03\/07\/usa-today-ipsos-poll-just-18-support-defund-police-movement\/4599232001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent<\/a> USA TODAY\/Ipsos Poll also found that less than 1-5 of Americans support it, along with only 28% of black Americans and 34% of Democrats.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/06\/derek-chauvin-george-floyd-minneapolis-police-department-metropolitan-police-department-george-floyd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Police Departments Say Budget Cuts Are The Reason They\u2019ve Been Unable To Hire New Officer)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefund the police\u201d took the political world by storm as liberal activists used outrage over the May 2020 death of George Floyd to push for budget cuts to police departments all over the country. With unpopular support \u2014 including in liberal hotspots \u2014 for the campaign on police, Democrats have come to realize the loud voices in their party are in fact a minority and are hurting their electoral chances. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/obama-against-defund-police-slogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Obama Comes Out Against \u2018Defund The Police\u2019 Slogan)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republicans continue to use it to their political advantage and have often tied their Democratic opponents to the movement. It is often regarded as the cudgel which caused Democrats to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/05\/2022-house-democrats-concerns-pelosi-caucus-call-election-abigail-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fail<\/a> in flipping a single House seat in 2020. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/25\/your-ideas-stupid-bill-maher-millennials-supporting-communism-abolishing-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018The Problem Is Your Ideas Are Stupid\u2019: Bill Maher Rips Millennials For Supporting Communism And Abolishing Police)&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how they beat the living hell out of us across the country, saying that we\u2019re talking about defunding the police. We\u2019re not. We\u2019re talking about holding them accountable,\u201d then president-elect Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/10\/biden-defund-police-democrats-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> on a phone call with civil rights leaders shortly after the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the progressive squad, such as Reps <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/01\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-not-satisfied-cutting-nypd-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/05\/ilhan-omar-minneapolis-police-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ihan Omar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/12\/rashida-tlaib-daunte-wright-government-funded-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashida Tlaib<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/19\/squad-members-defund-police-spent-thousands-private-security-protect-themselves-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-ilhan-omar-ayanna-pressley-cori-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ayanna Pressley,<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoriBush\/status\/1333955011475365888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1333955011475365888%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2021%2F04%2F19%2Fsquad-members-defund-police-spent-thousands-private-security-protect-themselves-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-ilhan-omar-ayanna-pressley-cori-bush%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cori Bush<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamaalBowmanNY\/status\/1344051941140275202?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamaal Bowman<\/a> have repeatedly either called for defunding the police or re-allocating their budgets elsewhere. \u201cDefunding police means defunding police,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/01\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-not-satisfied-cutting-nypd-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in July after New York City voted to cut $1 billion from the budget of the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these calls for defunding police, and the less than stellar public reaction, moderate Democrats attempted to distance themselves from the movement or have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/08\/nancy-pelosi-defund-police-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">avoided directly<\/a> addressing it. The movement is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/05\/2022-house-democrats-concerns-pelosi-caucus-call-election-abigail-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">so unpopular<\/a> with&nbsp;voters that Democrats are now claiming Republicans are the ones actually doing it.<\/p>\n<p>On a Sunday segment of Fox News, host Chris Wallace challenged Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Banks with the Democrats\u2019 new zinger for the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan\u2019t you make the argument that it\u2019s you and the Republicans who are defunding the police?\u201d Wallace asked Rep. Banks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wallace\u2019s question stemmed from the novel assertion by the Democrats that it\u2019s actually Republicans who want to defund the police because they opposed President Joe Biden\u2019s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill that was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/10\/american-rescue-plan-joe-biden-whats-in-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed<\/a> into law without Republican support. The plan contained a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/27\/american-rescue-plan-covid-19-coronavirus-relief-package-house-of-representatives-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$350 billion<\/a> appropriation designated to state local, and tribal governments to serve as a stimulus to their budgets that were depleted by the pandemic. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/10\/kevin-mccarthy-1-9-trillion-covid-19-relief-bill-pelosi-payoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Kevin McCarthy Calls $1.9 Trillion Bill \u2018The Pelosi Payoff,\u2019 Says To Stop Calling It \u2018COVID Relief\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some local governments have used this relief money to boost their police departments. For example, North Haven and Hamden, Connecticut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtnh.com\/news\/connecticut\/new-haven\/rep-delauro-gov-lamont-to-tout-federal-efforts-to-help-first-responders-local-government-in-north-haven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used<\/a> the funds to hire new police officers and firefighters. Many others have also used it to invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/how-the-american-rescue-plan-act-will-help-cities-replace-police-with-trained-crisis-teams-for-mental-health-emergencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Multnomah County, Oregon (which is where Portland is located) allocated relief funds to support groups that focus on aiding African American members of the LGBT community and organizations that assist immigrants and refugees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pandemicoversight.gov\/track-the-money\/funding-charts-graphs\/coronavirus-relief-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the oversight board that tracks the relief funds.<\/p>\n<p>The wide range of uses for the funds is because the provision is not specifically designated for law enforcement only.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans opposed the relief package <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/10\/american-rescue-plan-joe-biden-whats-in-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also<\/a> centered around its vast number of provisions for items not related to COVID-19. Other reasons included the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/10\/american-rescue-plan-joe-biden-whats-in-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fact<\/a> that the money was not subject to the Hyde Amendment, which would prevent it from funding abortion services.<\/p>\n<p>According to Democrats, Republicans de facto supported defunding the police because they didn\u2019t express support for Biden\u2019s rescue plan.<\/p>\n<p>White House senior adviser Cedric Richmond made a point <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/27\/cedric-richmond-republicans-defunding-police-covid-relief-chris-wallace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earlier<\/a> on Wallace\u2019s program in which he appeared to blame Republicans for increases in violent crime as well as efforts to defund the police.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also floated the idea in the White House press briefing on June 23, later doubling down on the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/28\/psaki-republicans-defund-police-american-rescue-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claim<\/a> Monday, along with White House rapid response director Mike Gwin, and several Democrats on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.703601108033\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Absolutely shameless.
