We\u2019re not done \u2014 we still have to turn the tide on a teen vaping epidemic that was borne of JUUL\u2019s greed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to paying $40 million over the next six years, JUUL Labs agreed to reform its business practices in North Carolina:<\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No marketing that appeals to people under the age of 21.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No using most social media advertising, influencer advertising, outdoor advertising near schools, and sponsoring sporting events and concerts.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No claims that compare the health effects of using JUUL with the health effects of using combustible cigarettes in its marketing materials.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No online sales to anyone not age verified by an independent verification system and making sure third-party sales partners do the same.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No retail sales to anyone not age verified using a barcode scanner.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>Ensure its products are sold behind counters so shoppers cannot access them without a shop employee\u2019s assistance.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>Maintain a retailer compliance secret shopper program in North Carolina to ensure these measures are followed and hold accountable retailers that fail.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><i><span>No new flavors or nicotine content levels without FDA authorization.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Policymakers across the United States are attempting to restrict the sale of flavored nicotine products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For instance, California sought to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/californias-ban-on-flavored-tobacco-sales-suspended-as-big-tobacco-funds-drive-to-repeal-law\"><span>regulate<\/span><\/a><span> the sale of flavored tobacco by instituting fines of $250 per sale of flavored vape juice or menthol cigarettes. The law was suspended after a massive lobbying effort from California Coalition for Fairness, which is funded by large tobacco companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In April, the Biden administration likewise <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/04\/29\/press-gaggle-by-principal-deputy-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-aboard-air-force-one-en-route-plains-ga\/\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> its intention to regulate menthol cigarette sales.
