He was 78.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, Paramount took the successful \u201cCops\u201d series off of its network, caving to criticism that the show portrayed a \u201cpro-police perspective,\u201d in its videos of police encounters, per ABC News.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c\u2018Cops\u2019 is not on the Paramount Network and we don\u2019t have any current or future plans for it to return,\u201d a Paramount Network spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/cops-tv-show-canceled-amid-unrest-over-death-george-floyd-n1228906\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a> in a statement at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/tv\/news\/cops-season-33-paramount-network-george-floyd-1234626422\/\"><span class=\"s1\">report<\/span><\/a> by Variety announced the cancellation of the series last year before it was officially confirmed that the show would not be returning to the network.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Sunday, Variety <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/news\/john-langley-dead-cops-1235006123\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"25.450317124736\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>For 32 seasons, [\u201cCops\u201d] was a reality TV juggernaut, running for over 1,000 episodes and introducing the cin\u00e9ma v\u00e9rit\u00e9 style of documentary to television. The familiar theme song by Ian Lewis of Inner Circle became a part of pop culture. It remains in production for overseas networks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>After being canceled by Fox in 2013, \u201cCops\u201d moved to the Spike network, now Paramount Network before being canceled again in 2020. A\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/tv\/news\/cops-season-33-paramount-network-george-floyd-1234626422\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>podcast had detailed<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>\u00a0how police were able to remove portions of the shows that showed them negatively and how some people were coerced into signing waivers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>After trying for several years to find a network, Langley and his production partner Malcolm Barbour were able to get the show on the air at the fledging Fox in the aftermath of the 1988 Writers Guild strike, since it had no union writers.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>In its early years, \u201cCops\u201d was nominated four times for Emmys in the outstanding informational series category.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Langley, born in Oklahoma City, was raised in Los Angeles, California. He <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/wireStory\/cops-creator-john-langley-dies-road-race-mexico-78525175\"><span class=\"s1\">reportedly<\/span><\/a> graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and also served in the United States Army in the 1960s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">ABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/wireStory\/cops-creator-john-langley-dies-road-race-mexico-78525175\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> that Langley produced other creations over the years, as well, including the 2009 film \u201cBrooklyn\u2019s Finest.\u201d He was also a producer \u201con the non-fiction series \u2018Jail,\u2019 \u2018Vegas Strip\u2019 and \u2018Anatomy of a Crime.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cLangley is survived by his son and producing partner, Morgan, who oversees their company Langley Productions; another son, Zak; two daughters, Sara Langley Dews and Jennifer Blair; his wife, Maggie, and seven grandchildren,\u201d per the outlet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Anti-police rhetoric in Hollywood and the mainstream media have led to a surge of police officers looking to change their professions in the past year after riots and protests took hold in major cities across the country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/11\/us\/police-retirements-resignations-recruits.html\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>, the number of police officers retiring and leaving the force went up last year.
