For example, where the same users have reviewed the same range of products or businesses at similar times to each other and there is no connection between those products or businesses \u2014 or where the review suggests that the reviewer has received a payment or other incentive to write a positive review.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Investigate and, where necessary, remove promptly fake and misleading reviews from their platforms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Impose adequate sanctions on reviewers or businesses to deter them and others from posting fake or misleading reviews on their platforms \u2014 including those who have published these types of reviews many times.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Our worry is that millions of online shoppers could be misled by reading fake reviews and then spending their money based on those recommendations. Equally, it\u2019s simply not fair if some businesses can fake 5-star reviews to give their products or services the most prominence, while law-abiding businesses lose out,\u201d said the CMA\u2019s Chief Executive, Andrea Coscelli. \u201cWe are investigating concerns that Amazon and Google have not been doing enough to prevent or remove fake reviews to protect customers and honest businesses. It\u2019s important that these tech platforms take responsibility and we stand ready to take action if we find that they are not doing enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The press release also noted that the CMA was concerned that \u201cAmazon\u2019s systems have been failing adequately to prevent and deter some sellers from manipulating product listings,\u201d with one example being \u201cco-opting positive reviews from other products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/amazon-and-google-fake-reviews-to-be-investigated-by-antitrust-regulator\/\"><span>CNET<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201c<\/span><span>an Amazon spokesperson said via email that the company devotes \u2018significant resources\u2019 to stopping fake reviews from appearing in its store and will work with the CMA in its probe.\u201d Meanwhile, CNET added that a Google spokesperson said, \u201cOur strict policies clearly state reviews must be based on real experiences, and when we find policy violations, we take action \u2014 from removing abusive content to disabling user accounts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/25\/tech\/amazon-google-fake-reviews\/index.html\"><span>CNN<\/span><\/a><span> reported that \u201c<\/span><span>The CMA has launched a separate investigation into Facebook looking at the same issue and last week said it is investigating Apple and Google\u2019s dominance in mobile operating systems, app stores and web browsers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
