As the National Anthem began to play with the winners standing on the podium, Berry turned away from the flag so that she was facing the stands. Toward the end of the anthem, she pulled up a black t-shirt with the words \u201cActivist Athlete\u201d on the front to cover her head.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-olympic-games-sports-2e9911837edab52ac4ddd8a5d02a714e?utm_medium=AP_Sports&#038;utm_source=Twitter&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\">Associated Press<\/a>, the national anthem has been played every night for the past week at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, but the anthem is not played during medal ceremonies like it is during the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national anthem was scheduled to play at 5:20 p.m. today,\u201d USA Track and Field spokesman Susan Hazzard <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-olympic-games-sports-2e9911837edab52ac4ddd8a5d02a714e?utm_medium=AP_Sports&#038;utm_source=Twitter&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe didn\u2019t wait until the athletes were on the podium for the hammer throw awards. The national anthem is played every day according to a previously published schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anthem began at 5:25 on Saturday, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p>Berry felt the timing of the playing was done on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like it was setup,\u201d Berry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/06\/26\/gwen-berry-protest-olympic-trials\/\">said<\/a> with a burst of laughter. \u201cI feel like they did that on purpose, and I was pissed, to be honest. I was thinking about what should I do. Eventually, I just stayed there and just swayed. I put my shirt over my head. It was real disrespectful. I know they did that on purpose, but it\u2019ll be all right. I see what\u2019s up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was funny because they said they were going to play it before we walked out,\u201d Berry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/06\/26\/gwen-berry-protest-olympic-trials\/\">said<\/a> according to The Washington Post. \u201cIt just happened they played it when we were out there. So, you know, it\u2019s okay. I really don\u2019t want to talk about the anthem because that\u2019s not important. The anthem don\u2019t speak for me. The move led to a formal reprimand from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, but Berry was not suspended. She did, however, receive a 12-month probation.<\/p>\n<p>Berry said that turning away during the anthem was not a message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really wasn\u2019t a message,\u201d Berry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/06\/26\/gwen-berry-protest-olympic-trials\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be up there. I felt like it was a setup. I was hot. I was ready to get my pictures and get to some shade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,\u201d Berry <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2020-tokyo-olympics-olympic-games-sports-2e9911837edab52ac4ddd8a5d02a714e?utm_medium=AP_Sports&#038;utm_source=Twitter&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\">said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m here to represent those \u2026 who died due to systemic racism. That\u2019s the important part. That\u2019s why I\u2019m going. That\u2019s why I\u2019m here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeAnna Price won gold in the event with a throw of 262 feet, 6 inches, and said she was \u201cproud\u201d of Berry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people should say whatever they want to say.
