Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GettyImages-564114045.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.0.3\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"  style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<p>In an exclusive report out Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/national-archives-rotunda-structural-racism\">Fox News noted that a \u201clittle noticed<\/a>\u201d report from a National Archives task force on racism suggested the building, where America\u2019s founding documents are displayed, was an example of \u201cstructural racism\u201d and suggested major changes to how the Constitution and other notable records are presented in order to provide \u201ccontext.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group also reportedly suggested that the National Archives portrayal of individual founding fathers was too positive.<\/p>\n<p>The group, Fox News said Sunday, \u201cclaimed in a little-noticed report to the U.S.\u2019s top librarian that the Archives\u2019 own Rotunda \u2013 which houses the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights \u2013\u00a0is an example of \u2018structural racism\u2019 and that the Founding Fathers and other White, historically impactful\u00a0Americans are portrayed too positively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The task force, which completed its work in April, noted that \u201cstructural racism\u201d included \u201clegacy descriptions that use racial slurs and harmful language to describe BIPOC communities,\u201d like racial slurs but also terms like \u201celderly,\u201d \u201chandicapped\u201d and \u201cillegal alien.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Archives rotunda fell under serious scrutiny because it\u2019s frescoes and displays laud the achievements of \u201cwealthy White men in the nation\u2019s founding while marginalizing BIPOC [Black, Indigenous and other People of Color], women, and other communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They suggested that the National Archives engage in activities that could provide \u201ccontext\u201d to the rotunda and documents through \u201cdance or performance art in the space that invites dialogue about the ways that the United States has mythologized the founding era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the documents and displays, the committee suggested \u201ctrigger warnings\u201d for individuals who might suffer \u201cphysiological and psychological symptoms\u201d as a result of coming into contact with the information and artwork in the rotunda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProviding an advisory notice to users gives us an opportunity to mitigate harm and contextualize the records,\u201d the report said, per Fox. \u201cIt creates a space to share with the public our ultimate goals for reparative description, demonstrate our commitment to the process, and address any barriers that we may face in achieving these goals (i.e., the size and scope of the Catalog and the ever-evolving knowledge we gain regarding what is harmful).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee also suggested the National Archives add \u201csafe spaces\u201d where visitors having difficulties could take a time out and process the information.<\/p>\n<p>As for the founders, the committee had ideas about how to contextualize Revolutionary War heroes, including the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19\">\n<p>OurDocuments.gov features transcripts and historical context of \u2018100 milestone documents of American history\u2019 but often uses adulatory and excessive language to document the historical contributions of White, wealthy men.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a search of Thomas Jefferson in OurDocuments.gov brings up 24 results. He is described in this sample lesson plan as a \u2018visionary\u2019 who took \u2018vigorous action\u2019 to strengthen the \u2018will of the nation to expand westward.<\/p>\n<p>The plan does not mention that his policy of westward expansion forced Native Americans off their ancestral land, encouraged ongoing colonial violence, and laid the groundwork for further atrocities like the Trail of Tears.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The National Archives\u2019 director commissioned the report last year following George Floyd\u2019s death.
