Pat Toomey criticized President Joe Biden\u2019s nominee to lead a top financial regulator for ignoring an information request about the agency\u2019s potentially illegal hiring practices.<\/p>\n<p>Rohit Chopra, Biden\u2019s nominee to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/22\/jody-hice-pat-toomey-house-oversight-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)<\/a>, has completely ignored a request for information regarding his involvement in the agency\u2019s reported strategy forcing senior officials to vacate their positions, Toomey said. Chopra\u2019s refusal to share information with the committee suggests he won\u2019t be responsive to oversight if he is confirmed to the position, Toomey added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Chopra\u2019s silence and total disregard of a congressional inquiry calls into question his fitness to serve,\u201d Toomey said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation on Thursday. \u201cI fear Mr. Chopra\u2019s refusal to give basic answers to Congress while his nomination is pending before the Senate leaves little doubt about how he will treat congressional oversight if he is confirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Toomey <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/18\/pat-toomey-joe-biden-consumer-financial-protection-bureau-banking-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent<\/a> Chopra, currently a member of the Federal Trade Commission, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banking.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/letter_to_chopra.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> with a list of questions about whether he had been made aware of the CFPB\u2019s alleged hiring practices. The Pennsylvania senator gave Chopra until Monday to respond, but hasn\u2019t received a response as of Thursday evening. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/republicans-oversight-financial-service-committee-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: More Top Republicans Pressure IG To Probe Biden\u2019s Hiring Practices)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The allegations stem from a recent GovExec\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/management\/2021\/06\/biden-employs-aggressive-strategy-sideline-top-career-officials-consumer-protection-bureau\/174711\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>, which outlined how the senior CFPB officials have been forced out to make way for individuals closely aligned with the White House agenda since Biden took office. (Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since Chopra would ultimately be tasked with filling the vacancies if he is confirmed, Toomey asked him how much he knew about the alleged scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The CFPB, meanwhile, has stalled in responding to a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banking.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/letter_to_cfpb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> Toomey sent to Acting Director Dave Uejio last week. Toomey gave the agency until Monday to answer his questions and until Thursday to provide the committee with relevant records.<\/p>\n<p>The agency hasn\u2019t met either deadline and has asked for additional time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that CFPB cannot promptly answer simple, straightforward questions from Congress about whether agency leadership has been taking unusual and possibly unlawful actions to push out career employees and replace them with hand-picked loyalists,\u201d Toomey told the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p>A CFPB spokesperson said the agency had received Toomey\u2019s letter and was crafting a response in a statement to the DCNF last week. The spokesperson added that the GovExec report contained factual errors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bureau takes its responsibilities as a federal employer seriously and complies with all applicable laws concerning federal personnel,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>At least three House Republicans have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/23\/republicans-oversight-financial-service-committee-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urged the CFPB inspector general<\/a> to open an investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
