Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) asked President Biden to \u201cswiftly\u201d extend the federal pause on student loan payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Letter%20to%20Biden%20re%20extension%20of%20payment%20pause%20final%206.23.21%20final.pdf\"><span>letter<\/span><\/a><span>, the three lawmakers \u2014 joined by 61 of their colleagues \u2014 want to continue the Department of Education\u2019s pause on student loan repayments until next spring:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p><i><span>The suspension of payments and interest during the pandemic has provided essential relief to borrowers and their families during this economic and public health crisis. Restarting payments, however, will present a significant challenge for borrowers, loan servicers, and the Department of Education (ED), and we urge you not to let the payment pause lapse when borrowers are still depending on this financial relief\u2026 Specifically, we ask that you extend the pause by at least six months \u2014 until March 31, 2022 \u2014 or until the economy reaches pre-pandemic employment levels, whichever is longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The Democrats argued that the President\u2019s move was especially necessary because the recession harmed ethnic minorities and women:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p><i><span>Even as the economic recovery picks up steam, it is not reaching all Americans equally. Women and people of color have been disproportionately harmed by the pandemic, which some experts have deemed \u201cthe most unequal recession in modern U.S. history,\u201d and they have recovered at a slower rate. The same groups make up a disproportionate share of student borrowers. Black students, in particular, borrow more to attend college, borrow more often while they are in school, and have a harder time paying their debt off than their white peers. The median Black borrower still owes 95% of their debt twenty years after starting college, compared to only 6% for the median white borrower.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Among other lawmakers signing the letter were Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During her campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, Warren faced heat after she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savingforcollege.com\/article\/elizabeth-warren-confronted-over-student-loan-proposal-by-father-who-saved-for-college\"><span>dismissed<\/span><\/a><span> the concerns of a voter who disagreed with her student loan forgiveness proposals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI just wanted to ask one question,\u201d the Iowa father said to Warren. \u201cMy daughter is getting out of school. I\u2019ve saved all my money. She doesn\u2019t have any student loans. Am I going to get my money back?\u201d Warren replied, \u201cOf course not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Biden recently drew <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/budget-report-biden-dropping-student-loan-forgiveness-he-promised-during-campaign\"><span>ire<\/span><\/a><span> from leftists after he dropped student loan forgiveness \u2014 a promise that he made on the campaign trail \u2014 from his first budget proposal. Three months earlier, he announced that he would not attempt to use executive powers to forgive debtors of $50,000 each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe case against student loan forgiveness is looking shakier by the day,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez remarked on social media after the President\u2019s comments. \u201cWe\u2019ve got the *Senate Majority Leader* on board to forgive $50k. Biden\u2019s holding back, but many of the arguments against it just don\u2019t hold water on close inspection. We can and should do it.
