But it omits key Democratic items like climate change and child care provisions, frustrating progressives who have said that they are blowing their chance to enact sweeping, long-sought policy goals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cI can\u2019t vote for some small subset \u2026 you know, the infrastructure train leaves the station and child care gets left on the platform, green energy gets left on the platform, billionaires don\u2019t have to pay gets left on the platform,\u201d Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren said Wednesday. \u201cIt\u2019s that all of the pieces have to move because ultimately it\u2019s one deal.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cLet me be really clear on this: We will not take up a bill in the House until the Senate passes the bipartisan bill and a reconciliation bill,\u201d said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. \u201cIf there is no bipartisan bill, then we\u2019ll just go when the Senate passes a reconciliation bill.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a bipartisan group of senators and the White House compromised on a physical infrastructure package Thursday, some prominent Democrats are threatening to tank its passage unless some of their top priorities are included in a complementary reconciliation bill.<\/p>\n<p>The $1.2 trillion bipartisan legislation, which has the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/24\/biden-manchin-infrastructure-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backing<\/a>\u00a0of five Senate Republicans and Democrats and President Joe Biden, includes more than $550 billion in new spending towards roads, bridges, waterways and other projects. However, it omits key Democratic items like climate change and child care provisions, frustrating progressives who have said that they are blowing their chance to enact sweeping, long-sought policy goals.<\/p>\n<p>As a solution, Democrats are preparing a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/chuck-schumer-infrastructure-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multi-trillion dollar reconciliation p<\/a>ackage that includes their central priorities and requires only a simple majority to pass, and have conditioned their support for the bipartisan bill on unified Democratic support of their own legislation. Given the Senate\u2019s 50-50 split and the bipartisan bill needing 60 votes to overcome a potential filibuster, any Democratic no votes could risk sinking the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t vote for some small subset \u2026 you know, the infrastructure train leaves the station and child care gets left on the platform, green energy gets left on the platform, billionaires don\u2019t have to pay gets left on the platform,\u201d Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow\/watch\/what-the-heck-is-going-on-with-infrastructure-legislation-sen-elizabeth-warren-explains-115372613730?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told MSNBC<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cIt\u2019s that all of the pieces have to move because ultimately it\u2019s one deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat [bipartisan] deal has 20 votes \u2014 not 60 votes,\u201d Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1407858038401347588?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told CNN<\/a> Wednesday, adding that other Democrats have to do a \u201cdeep dive\u201d on the bill before they guarantee their support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a time for us to be visionary and bold and lead as a Democratic Party,\u201d New York Democratic Rep. (Samuel Corum\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Democrats have also disagreed about some of the bipartisan bill\u2019s proposed pay-fors, like <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/23\/bipartisan-problem-solvers-caucus-gas-tax-finance-infrastructure-spending\/\">raising the gas tax<\/a> or imposing electric vehicle user fees, which they have argued will disproportionately impact the middle and lower class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the concerns I do have about the bipartisan bill is how they are going to pay for their proposals,\u201d Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeetThePress\/status\/1406620375883128840\">told \u201cMeet the Press\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Sunday. \u201cSome of the speculation is raising a gas tax, which I don\u2019t support, a fee on electric vehicles, privatization of infrastructure, those are proposals that I would not support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signed on to Democrats\u2019 reconciliation efforts during her weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_3LebVWIQTk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press conference<\/a> Thursday, saying that she would not bring the bipartisan legislation to the floor until the Senate passed both that package and the reconciliation bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be really clear on this: We will not take up a bill in the House until the Senate passes the bipartisan bill and a reconciliation bill,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cIf there is no bipartisan bill, then we\u2019ll just go when the Senate passes a reconciliation bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Progressive Democrats in the House have spoken similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1408095924736385030\">praising<\/a> Pelosi\u2019s message and vowing to oppose any bipartisan bill if it does not accompany a Democratic reconciliation bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was always unlikely for many members to support a bipartisan bill on infrastructure without a guarantee on a bold reconciliation bill moving simultaneously,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1407877321898463239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. \u201cIt\u2019s time to deliver big on behalf of our constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer met with Democrats on the Budget Committee last week to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/chuck-schumer-infrastructure-joe-biden\/\">begin drafting a reconciliation bill<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/21\/schumer-medicare-expansions-bidens-infrastructure-families-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endorsed a Medicare expansion<\/a> \u2014 a top Sanders priority \u2014 as part of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a gaping hole in Medicare that leaves out dental, vision, and hearing coverage,\u201d Schumer said Sunday. \u201cThis is a serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
