Landlords, however, \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/as-cdc-extends-ban-on-evictions-smaller-landlords-struggle-to-keep-properties\">especially those who run smaller businesses<\/a> \u2014 continue to struggle as the government allows people to forego their payments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The issue has made its way through the court system where some judges have ruled that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksn.com\/news\/local\/kansas-judge-finds-cdc-eviction-moratorium-unenforceable\/\">eviction moratorium is unenforceable<\/a>, or that the CDC does not have the power to take such action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Earlier this month, California Attorney General Rob Bonta \u201cjoined a coalition of 23 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in\u00a0the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) eviction moratorium,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-joins-brief-supreme-court-support-national-eviction\"><span class=\"s1\">California\u2019s Justice Department.<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It explained that last month, \u201cthe U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the CDC had overstepped its authority in imposing the eviction moratorium,\u00a0but stayed its decision, keeping the moratorium in place pending appeal to prevent harm to renters. Shortly after,\u00a0the Alabama Association of Realtors filed an emergency application to vacate the stay with the U.S. Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The attorney general, along with several other states, asked the Supreme Court to allow the moratorium to exist in order to protect renters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/as-cdc-extends-ban-on-evictions-smaller-landlords-struggle-to-keep-properties\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Daily Wire in March, the CDC extended its suggested moratorium on evictions through the end of June, causing some landlords at the time to struggle to keep up with costs. The conclusion of the moratorium could have been a potential lifeline to landlords at the end of June, but the CDC\u2019s newest order means that landlords must hold on for another month.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/money\/consumer\/dont-waste-your-money\/landlord-explains-why-rent-hikes-are-happening-amid-pandemic-eviction-moratorium\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by local outlet WXYZ Detroit, landlords explained why rent prices have been increasing for tenants.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe struggled along with everyone else in the pandemic,\u201d Deborah Collins said, who manages 25 apartments and rental homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe canceled all late fees for the year, we worked on payment plans for any residents that were behind,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She said that the eviction moratorium meant that landlords had to permit tenants to not pay rent for months. \u201cA lot of housing providers are trying to recoup those losses, and are doing it with a rental price hike,\u201d Collins noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Democratic lawmakers have been pushing for the moratorium to not only continue, but be enhanced. As The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-coronavirus-pandemic-health-business-government-and-politics-4f40c6aeefbfec1a42a0efd387279d5f\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> earlier this week, \u201cdozens of members of Congress wrote to Biden and CDC Director Rochelle Walensky calling for the moratorium to be not only extended but also strengthened in some ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe letter, spearheaded by Democratic Reps.
