A small moment of escape from a world otherwise filled with political vitriol, when we could turn on the television and simply enjoy the beauty of sports in their purist form.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sports can be a great unifier. It doesn\u2019t matter what color your skin is, your religious beliefs, or even your political beliefs. None of those things are meant to come up when you\u2019re sitting in the arena or ballpark. Everyone in attendance is there for one thing: the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, things have changed over the past several years, with athletes foisting their political opinions on America <\/span><span>no longer being a rarity. Instead, it\u2019s the norm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m not someone who supports the concept of \u201cshut up and dribble.\u201d I think all people should be able to voice their opinions, even when I don\u2019t agree. However, when you speak out, you better have all the facts, or you\u2019ll end up looking foolish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the athletes who decided to dive into the political world and quickly exposed themselves as uninformed.<\/p>\n<p><b>LeBron James<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Where to start with James?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The NBA great doesn\u2019t hold back when it comes to speaking \u2014 or strategically choosing not to speak \u2014 on political issues. Just a few months ago, James inserted himself into the conversation surrounding the treatment of black Americans by police after a year of racially-charged protests and riots around the globe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After police shot a young black woman as she attempted to stab another young black woman, James weighed in. <\/span><span>While most felt the officer had no choice but to intervene, James felt differently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a now-deleted tweet, the future hall-of-famer posted \u201cYOU\u2019RE NEXT\u201d with a picture of the police officer below. James \u2014 facing furious backlash over doxxing an officer \u2013 quickly deleted the tweet before doubling down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.578313253012\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m so damn tired of seeing Black people killed by police.\u00a0I took the tweet down because its being used to create more hate -This isn\u2019t about one officer.\u00a0\u00a0it\u2019s about the entire system and they always use our words to create more racism. I am so desperate for more ACCOUNTABILITY<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 LeBron James (@KingJames) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingJames\/status\/1385013333007343619?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>On another occasion, Daryl Morey \u2014 then the President of Basketball Operations for the Houston Rockets \u2014 sent out a tweet in support of Hong Kong in October 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong,\u201d Morey wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>James \u2014 who has various business ties linked to China \u2014 didn\u2019t have the courage to stand up for Morey as he faced furious backlash from China and from the NBA. Arguably worrying more about his wallet than issues like democracy and freedom, James criticized Morey\u2019s tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t want to get into a \u2026 feud with Daryl Morey, but I believe he wasn\u2019t educated on the situation at hand and he spoke,\u201d James <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2019\/10\/15\/lebron-james-criticizes-daryl-moreys-decision-send-controversial-hong-kong-tweet\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cSo many people could have been harmed, not only financially but physically, emotionally, spiritually. Just be careful what we tweet, what we say and what we do. Yes, we have freedom of speech, but there can be a lot of negatives that come with that as well. \u2026 Sometimes social media is not always the proper way to go about things as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Megan Rapinoe\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Rapinoe is a global star \u2014 playing for the U.S. women\u2019s national soccer team \u2014 yet she always finds a way to play the victim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She signed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/megan-rapinoe-john-legend-lizzo-more-celebs-sign-open-letter-to-defund-police\"><span>letter<\/span><\/a><span> demanding \u201cdivestment from police,\u201d claimed to be \u201cdevalued, disrespected, and dismissed\u201d because she\u2019s a woman, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/soccer\/2016\/09\/04\/soccer-star-rapinoe-knells-during-national-anthem\/89875384\/\">knelt<\/a> for the national anthem in a \u201c<\/span><span>nod to [Colin] Kaepernick.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When it comes to the national anthem, Rapinoe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/megan-rapinoe-hosting-show-with-aoc-1619-project-creator-hannah-jones\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cI\u2019ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I\u2019ll probably never sing the national anthem again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reportedly worth over $3 million, Rapinoe has been at the forefront of the \u201cequal pay\u201d debate, demanding that she and her teammates be paid at the same level as the men\u2019s team, despite the revenue disparity between the two teams. She appeared at the White House in March to speak out on the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m a member of the LGBTQ community with pink hair, and where I come from, I could have only dreamed of standing in the position I am today at the White House. I\u2019m also a professional athlete, and I\u2019ve helped \u2013 along with all of my teammates virtually here today, one teammate literally here today \u2013 win four World Cup championships and four Olympic gold medals for the United States,\u201d Rapinoe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/megan-rapinoe-reportedly-worth-millions-claims-she-is-disrespected-and-dismissed-over-gender\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDespite those wins, I\u2019ve been devalued, I\u2019ve been disrespected and dismissed because I am a woman. I\u2019ve been told that I don\u2019t deserve any more than less because I am a woman. Not a fan of former President Donald Trump, Pop took every opportunity he could to take shots at the former Commander in Chief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe take our eye off the ball. He\u2019s great at it. It brings out the dark side of human beings for his own purpose, which is himself,\u201d Popovich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2018\/03\/27\/spurs-coach-gregg-popovich-guns-reassess-second-amendment\/464350002\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> of Trump in 2018. \u201cIf it\u2019s not pointed out, if people don\u2019t stand up and point it out and it will become commonplace. It\u2019s not the world I want to live in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pop is also a strong supporter of gun control. \u201cEven if they changed the age limit, it\u2019s all a Band-Aid,\u201d Popovich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2018\/03\/27\/spurs-coach-gregg-popovich-guns-reassess-second-amendment\/464350002\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe obvious elephant in the room is the guns, weapons of war, the magazines. The real discussion should be about the Second Amendment. Is it useful? Does it serve its purpose the way it was supposed to do in the beginning? That discussion should be had.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Spurs head coach was also very vocal about social justice after the death of George Floyd, saying he was \u201cembarrassed as a white person.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have to do it. Black people have been shouldering this burden for 400 years,\u201d Popovich <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/29274781\/spurs-coach-gregg-popovich-says-white-people-call-racism-no-matter-consequences\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe only reason this nation has made the progress it has is because of the persistence, patience and effort of black people. The history of our nation from the very beginning in many ways was a lie, and we continue to this day, mostly black and brown people, to try to make that lie a truth so that it is no longer a lie. And those rights and privileges are enjoyed by people of color, just like we enjoy them. So it\u2019s got to be us, in my opinion, that speak truth to power and call it out, no matter what the consequences. Where is the response from the team and the NFL? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MFPmz0PyOY\">pic.twitter.com\/MFPmz0PyOY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Price (@greg_price11) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1280337007961616391?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 7, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Following appropriate outrage, Jackson apologized, saying he \u201creally didn\u2019t realize what the passage was saying.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHitler has caused terrible pain to Jewish people like the pain African-Americans have suffered,\u201d Jackson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/07\/us\/desean-jackson-eagles-antisemitic-post-trnd\/index.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> on Instagram. \u201cWe should be together fighting anti-Semitism and racism. This was a mistake to post this and I truly apologize for posting it and sorry for any hurt I have caused.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stephen Jackson<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson became very involved in the Black Lives Matter movement after the death of George Floyd, and was seen out in the streets during numerous protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEvery time I watch that video, I see myself down there because we look so much alike,\u201d Jackson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/11\/sports\/basketball\/stephen-jackson-george-floyd-protests.html\"><span>said to the New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIt easily could have been me down there: Just let me get pulled over by an officer who\u2019s having a bad day and don\u2019t like the fact that I\u2019m in a nice car.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, his messages on social justice lost their significance after he supported DeSean Jackson\u2019s anti-Semitic statements, saying Jackson was \u201cjust speaking the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo I just read a statement that the Philadelphia Eagles posted regarding DeSean Jackson\u2019s comments,\u201d Jackson said in a now-deleted Instagram video. \u201cHe was trying to educate himself, educate people, and he\u2019s speaking the truth. Right? He\u2019s speaking the truth. You know he don\u2019t hate nobody, but he\u2019s speaking the truth of the facts that he knows and trying to educate others. But y\u2019all don\u2019t want us to educate ourselves. If it\u2019s talking about the black race, y\u2019all ain\u2019t saying nothing about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey killing us, police killing us and treating us like s***, racism at an all-time high, but ain\u2019t none of you NFL owners spoke up on that, ain\u2019t none of you teams spoke up on that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson\u2019s statement drew significant criticism from former athletes, including Charles Barkley. In a video tweeted out by \u201cNBA on TNT,\u201d Barkley condemned both DeSean and Stephen Jackson, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.9823008849558\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI don\u2019t understand how you beat hatred with more hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles on the recent anti-Semitic comments by athletes &#038; entertainers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/g2EfvXAxOv\">https:\/\/t.co\/g2EfvXAxOv<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DtF2aO6N5m\">pic.twitter.com\/DtF2aO6N5m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBAonTNT\/status\/1284146895821185025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Kyrie Irving<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Irving has long fancied himself as an intellectual, diving into topics that most NBA players tend to stay away from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Just last month, Irving chose not to answer questions on his Brooklyn Nets latest win, instead turning his attention to conflict in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p><i><span>I\u2019m not going to lie to you guys, a lot of stuff is going on in this world, and basketball is just not the most important thing to me right now. There\u2019s a lot of stuff going on overseas. All my people are still in bondage across the world, and there\u2019s a lot of dehumanization going on.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>So I apologize if I\u2019m not going to be focused on y\u2019all\u2019s questions. It\u2019s just too much going on in the world for me to just be talking about basketball. I focus on this s*** 24\/7, most of the time, but it\u2019s just too much going on in this world not to address. It\u2019s just sad to see this s*** going on. It\u2019s not just in Palestine, it\u2019s not just in Israel. It\u2019s all over the world, man, and I feel it. I\u2019m very compassionate \u2026 to all races, all cultures, and to see a lot of different people being discriminated against based on their religion, color of their skin, what they believe in.
