In a letter Wednesday, lawmakers asked to extend the pause by at least six months until March 31 or until employment levels return to pre-pandemic numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Student loan payments were first suspended for some time under the Trump administration with Biden extending the pause through September of this year. With the upcoming deadline, lawmakers are urging the administration to \u201cact quickly.\u201d However, some Republicans have previously opposed Democrats\u2019 stance on the issue of student debt.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.banking.senate.gov\/hearings\/the-student-debt-burden-and-its-impact-on-racial-justice-borrowers-and-the-economy\">Banking and Housing Committee held a hearing<\/a> that discussed student loan forgiveness, where Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) stated millions are in massive student loan debt and that $50,000 for each borrower should be cancelled.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our broken student debt system is saddling older Americans with an impossible burden.
