Jared Huffman (D-CA) on Wednesday for his recent call to strip the Catholic Church of its tax-exempt status after the\u00a0United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) voted to draft a document that could rebuke pro-abortion Catholic politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. Ben Sasse (R-NE) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) joined Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Doug Lamborn (R-CO) by criticizing Huffman in exclusive statements to The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019re going to politically weaponize religion by \u2018rebuking\u2019 Democrats who support women\u2019s reproductive choice, then a \u2018rebuke\u2019 of their tax-exempt status may be in order,\u201d Huffman tweeted, as The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-democrat-suggests-stripping-catholic-church-of-tax-exempt-status-if-biden-denied-communion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.5657370517928\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If they&#8217;re going to politically weaponize religion by &#8220;rebuking&#8221; Democrats who support women&#8217;s reproductive choice, then a &#8220;rebuke&#8221; of their tax-exempt status may be in order. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/P6TGVCOMYp\">https:\/\/t.co\/P6TGVCOMYp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Jared Huffman (@JaredHuffman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JaredHuffman\/status\/1405967871579103235?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 18, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Huffman\u2019s tweet was in response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/delauro.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/catholic-members-congress-release-statement-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>\u00a0last week from 60 Catholic House Democrats warning the USCCB against what they described as \u201cweaponizing\u201d the Eucharist. The USCCB voted overwhelmingly last Friday in favor of drafting\u00a0a document that could lead to a rebuke of publicly pro-abortion Catholic politicians such as President Joe Biden. The document, which will be made public at a later date, will advise bishops on how to best enforce the guidelines regarding the reception of Holy Communion.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/cod-iuris-canonici\/eng\/documents\/cic_lib4-cann879-958_en.html#Art._2.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Code of Canon Law,<\/a>\u00a0those who are \u201cobstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Jared Huffman and \u2014 more importantly \u2014 who does he think he is?\u201d Sasse told The Daily Wire. \u201cIn America, the federal government gets to say squat about how Jews celebrate Passover, how Muslims celebrate Ramadan, or how Christians celebrate Communion. Power-hungry politicians can\u2019t weaponize tax-exempt status to enforce theology. This is none of the government\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to President Biden to reconcile his political beliefs with his faith as a Catholic,\u201d Blackburn said. \u201cThat is between him and the Catholic Church. But it is beyond inappropriate for members of Congress to use their position in government to punish the Church for a sincere belief in the sanctity of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banks echoed Sasse and Blackburn, telling The Daily Wire: \u201cIt seems that many Democrats were surprised to learn that the Catholic Church has strong pro-life views. The more contempt the Democrat Party has for Christianity, the more hostile it becomes to religious liberty. The Left sees its values as incompatible with religious faith, and its frightening. Unfortunately for Rep. Huffman, our founders were wise enough to enshrine freedom of religion in the First Amendment, and the Supreme Court has been backing them up recently, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unconscionable that House Democrats are attempting to scare churches into silence simply because they are angry over their pro-life religious views,\u201d Lamborn said. \u201cReligious organizations should have an absolute right to express their First Amendment rights without fear of persecution from the IRS or federal government. Rep. Huffman\u2019s threat to remove the USCCB\u2019s tax-exempt status must be refuted.
