Vanessa Bryant, who filed the suit along with members of the families of the seven other people killed in the January helicopter crash, agreed to settle the lawsuit against the pilot and the helicopter company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-06-22\/vanessa-bryant-others-settle-lawsuit-with-helicopter-firm-in-kobe-bryant-crash\"><span>LA Times<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201c<\/span><span>the helicopter company and insurers filed \u2018joint notice of settlement and joint request to vacate discovery deadlines\u2019 documents with the court on Tuesday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna, were flying to Orange County along with six other passengers when the helicopter entered a thick fog in the mountains outside of Los Angeles. The pilot of the aircraft \u2014 Ara Zobayan \u2014 reportedly climbed to get out of the clouds but crashed into the mountains, killing all nine people onboard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The suit, filed against<\/span><span> Island Express Holding Corp. and Island Express Helicopters, alleged that <\/span><span>Zobayan failed <\/span><span>\u201cto use ordinary care in piloting the subject aircraft\u201d during the crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The National Transportation Safety Board determined in February that the decision to fly in cloudy conditions was the cause of the crash. The NTSB also noted that Zobayan \u201clikely\u201d felt pressure to get Bryant to his destination, contributing to the crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vanessa Bryant\u2019s suit claims that \u201cIsland Express Helicopters authorized, directed and\/or permitted a flight with full knowledge that the subject helicopter was flying into unsafe weather conditions.\u201d The complaint also alleges that Byrant died\u00a0 \u201cas a direct result of the negligent conduct of Zobayan,\u201d for which \u201cthe company is vicariously liable in all respects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, though Island Express Helicopters denied responsibility, calling the crash \u201can act of God\u201d it couldn\u2019t control.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the settlement against the pilot and helicopter company is now concluded, it does not put an end to the lawsuits resulting from the crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May, Bryant filed court documents <\/span><span>as part of an invasion of privacy lawsuit against Los Angeles County.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawsuit alleges that according to a Sheriff\u2019s Department investigatory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nba.nbcsports.com\/2021\/03\/19\/vanessa-bryant-names-officers-who-allegedly-shared-photos-in-ig-post\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span>, one deputy took 25 to 100 photos of the crash site \u2014 including Bryant\u2019s body \u2014 on his personal cell phone and that at least eight deputies took other photos at the site of the crash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Two Los Angeles County firefighters were also named in the suit and could be fired, while a third firefighter could be suspended after it was discovered they\u2019d allegedly taken and shared graphic photos from the crash site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An internal investigation found the two had taken photos of the bodies that \u201cserved no business necessity\u201d and \u201conly served to appeal to baser instincts and desires for what amounted to visual gossip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-la-county-sheriffs-office-embroiled-in-coverup-of-kobe-bryant-crash-site-photos\">The Daily Wire<\/a>, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has been accused of attempting to cover up the actions of the Los Angeles sheriff\u2019s deputies.
