During this series, a High-Power Laser system was installed on an aircraft and was tested in a number of scenarios. It successfully intercepted and destroyed all of the UAVs that were launched throughout the test. The ability to intercept and destroy airborne threats\u00a0<em>in the air<\/em>\u00a0is groundbreaking and offers a strategic change in the air defense capabilities of the\u00a0State of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirborne laser systems offer advantages over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/9345\/the-u-s-armys-laser-armed-stryker-has-blasted-dozens-of-drones\">ground-based laser systems<\/a>\u00a0due to the fact that they are carried aboard aircraft and therefore can be rapidly moved between locations. This offers added flexibility to respond to UAV threats wherever they might present themselves and provides greater coverage over a much wider area, especially when compared to a stationary system,\u201d \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/41192\/israel-has-shot-down-drones-with-an-airborne-high-power-laser\">The Drive<\/a> explained, adding that ground-based laser systems could be deleteriously affected by\u00a0 clouds and smoke.<\/p>\n<p>The press release also noted another advantage the airborne system has over the ground-based system: a low cost per interception. \u201cFootage shared online shows the system deployed on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22609\/wait-the-new-york-police-department-has-a-spy-plane-for-hunting-dirty-bombs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cessna 208 Caravan<\/a> behind a windowed panel on the left side of the aircraft\u2019s rear fuselage,\u201d The Drive reported.<\/p>\n<p>Oren Sabag, General Manager of Elbit Systems Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) Division,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/il\/news-releases\/israel-mod-successfully-completes-its-first-ever-series-of-interception-tests-employing-an-airborne-high-power-laser-system-301316340.html\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe use of a high-power laser to carry out low-cost airborne interception of rockets and hostile unmanned aircraft, closer to their launching areas and away from population centers, offers a significant change in Israel\u2019s defense capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Brett Tingley of The Drive noted,\u201cMilitants have been increasingly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/40601\/palestinian-militants-are-now-launching-suicide-drones-at-israel\">using drones to attack Israel<\/a>,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s also worth considering that one of the key benefits of lasers are they they can, at least in principle, fire indefinitely, so long as they have a sufficient and consistent power supply. This is important when considering questions about whether it is possible to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/40572\/continuous-mass-rocket-attacks-pose-new-challenges-for-israels-iron-dome-system\">simply overwhelm<\/a>\u00a0existing defense systems like Iron Dome. \u2026 Israel is the first to actually deploy a counter-drone laser aboard an aircraft and effectively make it work, at least from what has been publicly disclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/arab-israeli-conflict\/what-do-we-know-about-the-number-of-rockets-fired-at-israel-668339\">The Jerusalem Post<\/a> reported of Israel\u2019s Iron Dome in May: \u201cUp until last Monday, it intercepted 2,500 rockets in ten years since first being declared operational in 2011. This number is important considering the fact it had to intercept some 1,200 rockets in the past week fired from Gaza.
