Greg Abbott will call back his state\u2019s lawmakers for a special legislative session beginning July 8, where they will have the opportunity to pass a sweeping and hotly contested election reform package into law.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats stopped the package from advancing in the state Senate late last month after they <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/31\/democrats-texas-state-capitol-greg-abbott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quietly left the legislature<\/a> and broke quorum. Abbott responded quickly, vowing to force the legislature back in order to pass the bill, which he said was <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-statement-on-87th-legislative-session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of his top priorities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though Abbott did not explicitly say that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-greg-abbott-announces-special-session-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">special session<\/a> would include election legislation, he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bradj_TX\/status\/1400447452109492224?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously said<\/a> that the first of two planned additional sessions would focus on elections and bail reform. Greg Abbott signs bills into law to reform the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and weatherize and improve the reliability of the state\u2019s power grid earlier this month.(Montinique Monroe\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Republicans in the state Senate could either attempt to pass the same bill again or write a new piece of legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The original legislation, Senate Bill 7, would have limited mail-in voting, eliminated drive-thru voting and given more power to partisan poll watchers.<\/p>\n<p>After Democrats\u2019 stalled the bill, Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/01\/greg-abbott-suspend-lawmakers-pay-democrats-walk-election-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatened to strip lawmakers\u2019 pay<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/19\/texas-governor-voting-reform-legislature-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he officially did<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Democrats met with prominent lawmakers in Washington, D.C. last week, urging them to pass the \u201cFor the People Act,\u201d a sweeping voting bill that congressional Republicans universally oppose.
