The Catholic Church <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/prayer-and-worship\/the-mass\/order-of-mass\/liturgy-of-the-eucharist\/the-real-presence-faqs\">teaches<\/a> that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus Christ, and that to receive the Eucharist, one must be in \u201ca state of grace\u201d obtained by confessing any serious sins in the sacrament of confession.<\/p>\n<p>The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) overwhelmingly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/18\/united-states-conference-of-catholic-bishops-joe-biden-vatican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approved<\/a> a measure Friday to draft a statement discussing whether high profile pro-abortion politicians, such as Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, may be denied <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/17\/catholic-holy-communion-joe-biden\/\">communion<\/a>, since the Church teaches that publicly advocating for or supporting abortion is a sin of scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctrine committee of the bishops\u2019 conference will now begin drafting this document and, in the months ahead, the bishops will continue our prayer and discernment through a series of regional meetings and consultations,\u201d USCCB president Archbishop Jos\u00e9 H. Gomez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2021\/united-states-conference-catholic-bishops-vote-write-document-meaning-eucharist-life\">said in a Monday statement<\/a>. \u201cIn November, the bishops will gather to discuss the document draft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News of the bishops\u2019 discussions quickly aroused the ire of Democrats Friday afternoon. Sixty Catholic Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/18\/catholic-joe-biden-alexandria-ocasio-cortez\/\">issued a statement accusing<\/a> the bishops of weaponizing the Eucharist, and Democratic California Rep. (Photo by -\/VATICAN MEDIA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Media reporting on Ladaria\u2019s statement has framed the letter as an admonishment from the Vatican, though Ladaria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillarcatholic.com\/p\/how-should-us-bishops-read-the-ladaria\">explicitly wrote<\/a> that the conference had an obligation to oppose pro-abortion laws: \u201cThe bishops should affirm as a Conference that \u2018those who are directly involved in lawmaking bodies have a grave and clear obligation to oppose any law that attacks human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier last week, the Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/14\/world\/europe\/biden-vatican-communion-abortion.html\">published a story claiming<\/a> with little to no sourcing, except one comment from a reported close ally to the pope, that the Vatican was warning bishops to \u201chit the brakes\u201d on discussions to deny Biden communion. The publication repeatedly cited this story, \u201cVatican Warns U.S. Bishops: Don\u2019t Deny Biden Communion Over Abortion,\u201d as evidence that the Vatican warned the bishops not to reprimand Biden.<\/p>\n<p>There is no public statement from Pope Francis telling the bishops to halt the discussions. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtn.com\/catholicism\/library\/worthiness-to-receive-holy-communion-general-principles-2153\">2004 memo<\/a>, former Pope Benedict XVI (known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the time) wrote that Catholic politicians who are \u201cconsistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws\u201d should be viewed as publicly cooperating in sin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding the grave sin of abortion or euthanasia, when a person\u2019s formal cooperation becomes manifest (understood, in the case of a Catholic politician, as his consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion and euthanasia laws), his Pastor should meet with him, instructing him about the Church\u2019s teaching, informing him that he is not to present himself for Holy Communion until he brings to an end the objective situation of sin, and warning him that he will otherwise be denied the Eucharist,\u201d the former pope wrote, adding that if the person ignores these precautions and attempts to take communion anyways, the minister should \u201crefuse to distribute it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dias also accused conservative Catholics who take issue with Biden\u2019s support for abortion of turning \u201ca blind eye to the sexual improprieties of former President Donald J. Trump because they supported his political agenda,\u201d without noting that former President Donald Trump was not himself a Catholic.<\/p>\n<h3>Misrepresenting Catholic Teaching<\/h3>\n<p>Despite clear Catholic Church teaching on the Eucharist and on abortion, legacy media outlets suggest that \u201cconservative\u201d bishops wish to \u201crethink\u201d the \u201crules\u201d on the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Debate On Biden\u2019s Abortion Views, Bishops Vote to Rethink Communion Rules,\u201d NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/06\/18\/1007794929\/catholic-bishops-abortion-biden-communion\">headlined<\/a> a Saturday report.<\/p>\n<p>The headline widely misinterprets both the goal and the result of the bishops\u2019 discussions: on Friday, the bishops approved a measure to draft a statement on pro-abortion politicians receiving the Eucharist. The statement will not \u201crethink Communion rules\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/bishops-vote-to-draft-teaching-document-on-the-eucharist\/\">will examine<\/a> the \u201cmeaning of the Eucharist in the life of the church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/20\/us\/biden-abortion-catholic-church.html\">also incorrectly reported<\/a> that the Eucharist \u201crepresents the body and blood of Christ.\u201d The Catholic Church does not teach that the Eucharist represents the body and blood of Christ but that the Eucharist is the body of blood and Christ, transformed by a priest during the consecration at a Catholic Mass. The publication later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/21\/us\/joe-biden-communion-catholic-church.html\">published<\/a> a correct explanation of the Eucharist in a Monday explainer.<\/p>\n<p>In their defenses of Biden\u2019s faith, outlets like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/18\/us\/targeting-biden-catholic-bishops-advance-controversial-communion-plan.html\">New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/06\/21\/biden-catholic-faith-495361\">Politico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/18\/politics\/catholic-bishops-biden\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2021\/6\/19\/22541270\/biden-abortion-communion-catholic-bishops\">Vox<\/a> described Biden as \u201cperhaps the most religiously observant commander in chief since Jimmy Carter\u201d (NYT), \u201can observant Catholic who regularly attends Mass\u201d (VOX), and \u201ca deeply religious man\u201d (Politico).<\/p>\n<h3>Why Are Media So Loyal To \u2018Devout\u2019 Catholic Biden?<\/h3>\n<p>An examination by the DCNF previously <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/30\/devout-catholic-joe-biden-media-amy-coney-barrett\/\">found<\/a>\u00a0that major media outlets and reporters frequently celebrate Biden\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/08\/07\/joe-biden-donald-trump-roman-catholic-church\/\">Catholicism as \u201cdevout\u201d without noting the significance<\/a> of his divergence from Catholic teaching. Yet outlets and reporters also criticized the Catholicism of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett for her adherence to certain Catholic principles. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/09\/22\/media-catholic-people-of-praise-amy-coney-barrett-handmaids-tale\/\">(RELATED: Media Outlets Link Catholic Group Associated With Amy Coney Barrett To \u2018The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Patrick Deneen previously told the DCNF that Catholics who follow traditional Catholic teaching are viewed as \u201cthe enemy of the regime\u201d whose faith represents \u201ca hostile threat, a view of Catholicism that has remained consistent since the arrival of Catholics in the Protestant new world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe faith of an Amy Coney Barrett must be vilified and denounced as outside the pale, unacceptable to the regime,\u201d Deneen said. \u201cIn effect, they must be ostracized, excluded, defeated, even suppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who call Biden a \u201cdevout Catholic\u201d may do so in attempts to suggest that \u201cCatholicism is indistinguishable\u201d from liberal ideology, Dr. Chad Pecknold previously told the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a U.S. President cloaks himself in the outward signs of Catholic identity in order to expand access to abortion, or to use executive power to enforce a gender ideology that will inevitably threaten the freedom of the Church in this country, what you have before you is a Trojan Horse,\u201d said Pecknold, an associate professor of Theology at the Catholic University of America.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in his career, Biden frequently referenced his faith as a reason for his pro-life votes in the Senate, but he has since changed his abortion stances and today champions almost unlimited abortion access.
