Jim Jordan (R-OH) grilled Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday afternoon about high inflation and high unemployment in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Powell testified before the House of Representatives\u2019 Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis to discuss the United States\u2019 economic recovery following COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced recession. In prepared <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/testimony\/powell20210622a.htm\"><span>remarks<\/span><\/a><span>, he emphasized rising vaccination rates, improving GDP projections, and growing consumer expenditures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Powell admitted that inflation rates are rising and \u201cparticipation in the labor market has not moved up from the low rates that have prevailed for most of the past year\u201d \u2014 a reality relevant to the Fed\u2019s \u201cdual mandate to promote maximum employment and stable prices for the American people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During his questioning time, Jordan immediately challenged Powell on the policies affecting the Fed\u2019s ability to carry out its mandate.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"3.7260273972603\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xSvKEpqc5d\">pic.twitter.com\/xSvKEpqc5d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Seems like both have got some problems today\u2026 why are the jobs numbers so bad right now?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: Well, I think we\u2019re digging out of a very deep hole. We\u2019ve made a lot of progress, but I would agree with you \u2014 we have a long way to go.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: Over 9 million job openings over the past two months, only 800,000 jobs added back. That\u2019s pretty bad. Is there a specific reason you point to as why those numbers aren\u2019t where we would frankly hope they would be?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: It\u2019s a good question. My thinking is that there are some temporary factors that are weighing on job creation\u2026 actual hiring is at very high levels, but it\u2019s being offset by high levels of quits and retirements\u2026 What\u2019s happening is that the net job creation has been lower, but actual hiring is high\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: What about the unemployment benefits? Does that factor in as well?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: It may be a factor, and it\u2019ll be a temporary one because something like 15 million people will see either those benefits disappear or significantly decrease.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span>Jordan again asked Powell whether enhanced federal unemployment benefits are preventing Americans from seeking jobs, remarking that nearly all employers in his district are having a difficult time filling positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: You think it\u2019s more of quitting and retirements, or you think it\u2019s more unemployment, or a combination, or what is it?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: In terms of things that are weighing on people getting in the labor force, I think it\u2019s the three things I mentioned. It\u2019s still some people afraid of COVID \u2014 maybe they\u2019re living with someone who\u2019s vulnerable. It\u2019s also schools are closed, and having schools be open again will free up a lot of caretakers. I think unemployment benefits, too. You would expect a significant \u2014 a really strong set of jobs numbers coming up, beginning in the next month.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: Didn\u2019t you expect higher numbers in April and May?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: Yeah, I did.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: I guess when you pay people not to work, you shouldn\u2019t be surprised when you don\u2019t have workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Jordan then referenced twenty-five Republican governors\u2019 decisions to opt out of enhanced federal aid \u2014<\/span> <span>the first instance in his three-decade political career in which governors turned down federal money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He then asked whether high unemployment would continue if Democrats renew the enhanced benefits before their current September expiration date.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: If they renew them, won\u2019t that hurt?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: These are judgments for people who stand for election.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: No, I\u2019m just following your logic. You said if it runs out, that will help the employment situation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: I think we\u2019ll see strong job creation in the fall. I really do. As you pointed out, 9.3 million job openings, many millions of people unemployed. There seems to be some kind of a speed limit. It may just be that it\u2019s hard to match up with a new job, and people feel like they can wait a little bit longer and really shop carefully.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Jordan then pivoted to the issue of rising inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: As you said, you\u2019ve got two mandates at the Fed: stable employment and low unemployment. We\u2019ve got unstable employment, we\u2019ve got high inflation\u2026 on top of all that they\u2019re thinking about raising taxes. This is amazing to me \u2014 first you pay people not to work, then the folks who are working, you\u2019re going to raise their taxes\u2026 what do you think about all these policy ideas from the Democrats?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>POWELL: Again, it\u2019s not my job.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>JORDAN: No, but your job is stable employment and low inflation. Right now we have 9 million job openings and inflation that\u2019s went up five months in a row\u2026 I\u2019m not necessarily blaming you. I\u2019m blaming the Democrat policies\u2026 it seems to me, they\u2019re doing everything wrong, making your job that much harder.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Last week, the Fed dramatically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fed-dramatically-hikes-inflation-projection-in-much-awaited-meeting-will-not-taper-stimulus\"><span>raised<\/span><\/a><span> its inflation projection from 2.4% to 3.4% for 2021.
