How do you see it impacting our most vulnerable communities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acevedo pushed back against the sanitized definition of the police abolition movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look, first of all Defund the Police means different things to different people. For some folks, it means abolishing the police. For some other folks, it means to cut the police. But for folks that need us the most, which is unfortunately communities of color, it means less safety for them,\u201d he said. \u201cThis Defund the Police, this \u2018Let\u2019s not invest in good policing,\u2019 will not impact affluent neighborhoods, affluent communities; it will impact the communities that need us most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I can tell you having worked in the most diverse city in the country that if you go into high-crime neighborhoods in Houston, Texas, and you tell them you want to defund the police, they will scream you out of there,\u201d said Acevedo, who also served as chief of police in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>He seemingly made a reference to Fox News host Tucker Carlson\u2019s segment on the wealthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/tucker-carlson-cnn-hates-buckhead-trying-leave-atlanta\">Atlanta neighborhood of Buckhead<\/a> forming a separate community over safety and policing concerns before encouraging MSNBC\u2019s left-of-center viewers to support police funding as they would other government spending programs, like healthcare and job training.<\/p>\n<p>Ruhle seemingly ignored his comments and returned to her talking points, expressing her wish that \u201call lawmakers want all Americans to be better, safer, and smarter in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruhle\u2019s belief that \u201cDefund the Police\u201d means \u201cfully fund the police\u201d could hardly conflict more with the term\u2019s originators \u2014 nor, in many cases, could her concern about the safety of police officers.<\/p>\n<p>Black activists called on lawmakers to \u201cabolish\u201d the police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/black-community-activist-abolish-police-hank-berrien\">no later than 2016<\/a>. After Democratic politicians began watering down the term Defund the Police in the aftermath of George Floyd\u2019s death, Mariame Kaba wrote a New York Times op-ed last June titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/12\/opinion\/sunday\/floyd-abolish-defund-police.html\">Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough. We can\u2019t reform the police,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ny-times-op-ed-clears-up-defund-the-police-confusion-yes-we-mean-literally-abolish-the-police\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cThere is not a single era in United States history in which the police were not a force of violence against black people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Public spokespeople were clear that, at a minimum, Defund the Police meant denying law enforcement copious amounts of taxpayer funding. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nyc-proposed-budget-would-cut-1-billion-from-nypd-aoc-it-isnt-enough\">complained<\/a> after New York City cut the NYPD\u2019s budget by an estimated $1 billion, \u201cDefunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of the difference between the terms \u201cDefund the Police\u201d and \u201cAbolish the Police\u201d is semantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/4796-the-two-politics-2020-so-far\">wrote<\/a> University of California Davis professor Joshua Clover last summer. \u201cThose preferring the former regularly insist that\u00a0<em>\u2018<\/em>defund<em>;<\/em>\u00a0assuredly\u00a0<em>means<\/em>\u00a0\u2018abolish\u2019 while being more apprehensible to newcomers; it has a broader appeal,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople think that cops need to be reformed. They need to be killed,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-professor-reprimanded-for-saying-police-need-to-be-killed-reports-say\">said<\/a> during a 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/litseen.com\/joshua-clover\/\">interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, Congressional Democrats will not object, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrats-pass-bill-critics-say-defunds-police-and-reject-proposal-to-condemn-calls-to-abolish-police\">voted down<\/a> an <a href=\"https:\/\/republicanleader.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/MTR-332021.pdf\">amendment<\/a> in March from Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) that \u201ccondemns calls to \u2018defund,\u2019 \u2018disband,\u2019 \u2018dismantle,\u2019 or \u2018abolish\u2019 the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayors in major metropolitans areas agree with Acevedo\u2019s observation that calls to Defund the Police have increased violent crime.
