But the difficult work of collaboration is what we expect in Arizona. And I still believe it is the best way to identify realistic solutions \u2014 instead of escalating all-or-nothing political battles that result in no action, or in whipsawing federal policy reversals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She discussed accomplishments and laws that \u201ca bipartisan approach has produced\u201d since she was elected to Congress, including \u201claws curbing suicide among our troops and veterans, boosting American manufacturing, delivering for Native American communities, combating hate crimes, and protecting public lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On the topic of getting rid of the filibuster, Sinema was blunt: \u201cIt\u2019s no secret that I oppose eliminating the Senate\u2019s 60-vote threshold. I held the same view during three terms in the U.S. House, and said the same after I was elected to the Senate in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She added, \u201cIf anyone expected me to reverse my position because my party now controls the Senate, they should know that my approach to legislating in Congress is the same whether in the minority or majority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She said that sometimes the filibuster is needed \u2014 \u201cas it\u2019s been used in previous Congresses\u201d \u2014 in order \u201cto protect against attacks on women\u2019s health, clean air, and water, or aid to children and families in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She added that her \u201csupport for retaining the 60-vote threshold is not based on the importance of any particular policy,\u201d but rather \u201con what is best for our democracy. The filibuster compels moderation and helps protect the country from wild swings between opposing policy poles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Directly addressing critics who are aggressively pushing for the Senate rule to be abolished, she wrote:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>To those who want to eliminate the legislative filibuster to pass the\u00a0<\/i><span class=\"s2\"><i>For the People Act<\/i><\/span><i>\u00a0(voting-rights legislation I support and have co-sponsored), I would ask: Would it be good for our country if we did, only to see that legislation rescinded a few years from now and replaced by a nationwide voter-ID law or restrictions on voting by mail in federal elections, over the objections of the minority?<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>To those who want to eliminate the legislative filibuster to expand health-care access or retirement benefits: Would it be good for our country if we did, only to later see that legislation replaced by legislation dividing Medicaid into block grants, slashing earned Social Security and Medicare benefits, or defunding women\u2019s reproductive health services?<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>To those who want to eliminate the legislative filibuster to empower federal agencies to better protect the environment or strengthen education: Would it be good for our country if we did, only to see federal agencies and programs shrunk, starved of resources, or abolished a few years from now?<\/i><\/p>\n<div readability=\"8\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"11\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\"><em>This question is less about the immediate results from any of these Democratic or Republican goals \u2014 it is the likelihood of repeated radical reversals in federal policy, cementing uncertainty, deepening divisions and further eroding Americans\u2019 confidence in our government.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div readability=\"8.4475703324808\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"12.202046035806\">\n<p>Sinema called out President Joe Biden, stating that he opposed eliminating the filibuster in the past. \u201cI share the belief expressed in 2017 by 31 Senate Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/04\/07\/politics\/senate-filibuster-rules-letter\/index.html\"><span class=\"s2\">opposing the elimination<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the filibuster \u2014 a belief shared by President Biden.
