NYC, however, is using ranked-choice voting for the first time, making it hard to predict who will emerge victorious.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The primary campaign has been contentious, with candidates Andrew Yang and Kathryn Garcia teaming up during the final weekend of campaigning in an attempt to blunt frontrunner Eric Adams\u2019 late momentum.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The alliance drew sharp rebuke from Adams: \u201cFor them to come together like they are doing in the last three days, they\u2019re saying we can\u2019t trust a person of color to be the mayor of the City of New York when this city is overwhelmingly people of color.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Voters in New York City head to the polls Tuesday to decide who will become Democratic nominee to be the city\u2019s next mayor, and who will therefore likely lead its comeback from the pandemic, its fight against rising violent crime and more.<\/p>\n<p>Eight Democrats are vying to win Tuesday\u2019s primary, but polls have shown the top four \u2014 Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, former city sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia and Maya Wiley, a former counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio \u2014 pulling away from the other half of the field. New York City, however, is using ranked-choice voting, a method where voters rank their preferred candidates in order instead of picking just one, for the first time in its history, making it hard to predict who will emerge from Tuesday\u2019s race as the victor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ericadams2021.com\/safety\/\">Adams<\/a>, a former New York Police Department officer who has campaigned on lowering the city\u2019s crime rate and obtained the endorsement of most of the city\u2019s police organizations, has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/21\/eric-adams-frontrunner-new-york-city-mayor-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">led<\/a> in recent polls. Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Like throughout the 2020 presidential race, Yang\u2019s central pledge during his mayoral campaign has revolved around a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/06\/27\/sorry-yang-ubi-2020-debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">universal basic income<\/a>. Elizabeth Warren and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese accusations are a weaponization of real fears and concerns about our democracy, and have no place here,\u201d Wiley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mayawiley\/status\/1406990994533498887\/photo\/1\">statement<\/a> Sunday. \u201cRanked Choice Voting protects the voice of Black and brown voters \u2026 [It] \u2013 or alliances formed from it \u2013 is not voter suppression, it\u2019s not a poll tax and to compare it to that denigrates the work of so many who have come before us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Election is Tuesday, but early voting began on June 11, and as of Sunday evening <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boenyc\/status\/1406717162363015168?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 191,000<\/a> New Yorkers had already casted a ballot, according to the city\u2019s elections board.
